The doctor? Doctor who?

Thanks for the music. I noticed your avatar pic & that's why I came looking for a Doctor Who thread. :D

This is the second time on a second forum the cladistic nonsense of Silurians with boobs has come up  and the Homo reptilia classification. As much as I like scientific accuracy I'm allowing these to slide, though I though Reptilia sapiens would have been better.

As for the new intro, the theme sucks big ones however I love the time vortex CGI. The intro with the old theme would be pretty damn cool.

I think we're a bit behind here in Canada (they just aired Cold Blood last night, so please no spoilers).

You're in for a treat, the next 3 episodes are very, very, very good indeed. Series finale next week, can't wait.

Ahh. I knew I'd find like-minded quibblers here. I mean it wouldn't have been difficult to find some flat-chested actresses to play the parts (that ep. of ST:TNG with the "androgynous" species comes to mind), but maybe appealing to male fantasies is more important than scientific realism. Reptilia sapiens would have been a good compromise (not strictly accurate, but understandable and familiar to the audience).

I'm not too bothered by the score or the CGI. It's a little odd that they felt the need to re-vamp though, even with the new production team.

I'm very excited to see what's going to happen. Any news out there about the next series? Or Torchwood (I'm still hoping that they find a way to bring Ianto back)?

Meanwhile, SPACE, the channel that's airing DW, is showing 4 times a week the episodes starting with the re-boot, many of which (mostly the eps. with Martha) I haven't seen, so I'm enjoying that too (they're up to Bad Wolf).

I heard a rumour about a 4th series of Torchwood if they could find a good enough story to tell, which I hope they do because it got better with every season. 6th series of Dr Who is going ahead but I wont say more than that....spoliers :D

I can confirm that there is a new series of Torchwood. I also heard that some of next year's story arc has already been planted.

I want to ask a question but it's spoilers for people who haven't seen The Pandorica Opens. If I suggest time travel and an alien bar does my question become obvious?

Since I live in the States, I can't even look at this thread for about another month or so. Drat!

A month? 6 days until the finale seems like an eternity, a month would suck. You're in for a treat though, the last 3/4 episodes are fantastic. 'Vincent and The Doctor' is literally one of the best things I've ever seen on a TV.

I live in the states as well, i stream the episodes from various sites though so I've seen all of them to date (the Van Gogh episode was the best episode in a long long time in my opinion) if anyone wants a page they can stream from send me a PM i'm not sure about posting it in public as the blog which streams them does contain spoilers if you don't jump straight to the episodes

The Van Gogh episode was amazing, especially the bit where the curator is talking about Vincent. Incredibly moving.

Illegal pirating? Not even for Doctor Who... I'll just wait and be miserable.

This is an honest question because I honestly don't know, since Doctor Who is broadcast on public television, and as such the original broadcasts are not for profit, is recording and distribution of those original broadcasts on the internet illegal if it's also not done for profit?

The reason i ask is because piracy and theft laws are based on their impact upon the products ability to earn profit, but we're talking about public television (If we were talking about a DVD rip it would be another mater all together).

The copyright, distribution, and broadcast rights are owned by the BBC and the same rules which apply to, say, HBO apply also to them. All television broadcasts, whether by a public service broadcaster or not, are restricted. The BBC's worldwide arm sells its products internationally, so really, only the Brits get it ostensibly for free (we pay an annual license).

Not really, no. Copyrights give owners/content creators a temporary monopoly on their works and legal protection; profit isn't a requirement, although it is usually the reason given for starting legal proceedings. Also, piracy and theft aren't the same thing legally - they're used interchangeably by those who want to equate them, a longstanding corporate tactic (obfuscation, that is).
but we're talking about public television (If we were talking about a DVD rip it would be another mater all together).

Copyrights still apply. Recording the show (time-shifting) is not illegal, distribution without the owner's permission is illegal.

Creators have a limited right to their products both ethically and legally. Piracy certainly is a form of theft, and people who pretend otherwise are trying to shift the burden of guilt for their unethical behavior. I'm not good at pretending that unethical behavior is really acceptable.

......or, to avoid the messy 'theft' thing, one could use a british proxy and watch the whole series on iPlayer...

I wonder if any of you over there in the UK can do me a favour? I've duly paid for earlier eps. in iTunes, but have no access to episode commentaries (which is rather sad, as at least the earlier series were partially funded by the CBC, so why shouldn't we have the same access, right?). As far as I can tell, most proxy servers require you to pay for service, so that's not an option. But I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to record ep. commentaries as they play. If someone's willing to do that, all I'd need is the audio file.

...Enjoyable, although did have a few Deus ex Machinima moments I thought.

Did you see a subliminal Rory in that episode?

I'm not sure what you're referring to. The Doctor's accidentally calling VIncent Rory? Vincent's mention of Amy's sadness? Otherwise I don't think I noticed anything.
