Underwater cities... hmm.. don't really see the fun of it...
Nothing more than the excitement of engineering complete underwater systems, capable of making the trip across the ocean not only quick via perpetual Minecart system - but with places to stop, chill, and develop more above-water colonies and access points?

I think it's more of my engineering side that speaks in these situations - just a childish fascination with being able to have water all around you, but having the skill and tools to make a complete world in something that seems 100% uninhabitable.

I don't understand your last point.. 3)
Isn't there some server that people from our site frequent?

Hmm... underwater cities seem intriguing now... However, it seems like quite a hard thing to expand... Every time you need to expand a bit you have to let water in, I imagine... Isn't that quite a hassle?!

There's 2 methods.

1) Steadily add onto the chamber block by block whilst wadint through water.
2) Jump in the water, build, come up for air, go down again, and build. Even then, you still have to deal with Water in the chambers, but all you have to do is fill it with dirt and the water block disappears - then dig the dirt out.
I like to use wood for the walls (2 high off the ground) and an unsupported glass roof 1 block above that. Then I dig out the ground 2 blocks, add 1 block of stone flooring and replace any remaining dirt on the walls with wood. 'Tis the bomb diggity.

The only time I've ever used method 1 is when I wanted to extend my kingdom under a large, iced-over area. It was tedious, but now you can walk over that ice and look down and see a glowing underwater tunnel system.

The MAIN PROBLEM with this system, however, is the fact that you have to put torches EVERYWHERE - because underwater, monsters can spawn even in the daylight hours due to the ammount of light that water absorbs. (Creepers + Underwater System = Your life fucked up more than usual)
But from the proper vantage point underwater, or even ABOVE water, you can see your glowing creation sliver like a serpantine snake, silthering through water. I was even going to use it to make an adventure map in creator mode - which I hope will be an enjoyable experience.

In step 2 you could instead of going up to get air, just place a door at the bottom of the "ocean" it will create an "air bubble" allowing you to breathe.

I think you can use ladders for the same effect.

Oh and when building underwater if you got them, use "jack-O-lantern" (pumpkin + torch) to lit up the sea floor.

It's not a problem with underwater illumination - just tunnel illumination. Monsters can't spawn UNDER WATER, they spawn in the tunnels...
And creepers just make your day 1000 times worse.

Sure, although placing some lanterns on the sea floor helps you see what you are doing, it's not to prevent mobs from spawning. If you do not have any lanterns, you could use glass from the seabed to the surface, but it only works during the day time.

I always try to wrap-up the sectioning of my tunnels duiring the night, and just clear out the water/mine/sleep/build on buildings, towers, etc. through the night.

Does anyone know how to open Minecraft in Build mode so I can make this BOSS underwater adventure game I have planned?

Well, I play it usually on peaceful.
Anyways, do you know any good underwater city tutorial you've based your building on? It's pretty hard to tell what it is that you mean here in the forums.

While I'm abroad I can't play minecraft as my video card on my laptop doesn't agree with me. 2 more weeks and then I'll finally be playing again :D

Once I get back me and a couple of friends are going to begin anew on a server and one of the first things we'll build are two loot factories. They make hunting mobs basically obsolete as in no time you'll have enough drops from all kinds of monsters and normal creatures and are the best way to get enough sulphur/gunpowder for large amounts of dynamite if you don't want to cheat :)

About building under water: placing ladders, as mentioned above somewhere, is indeed a good tactic to go by.

I'm... Engineeringly inclined. I made up my methods on my own.

What scale are you talking about btw CosmicJ?

If you want an enormous underwater base (and not one dug out beneath the sea bed, 'cause that's rather easy) maybe the easiest way would be to dam/ wall in an area, fill er up, dig it out and build your constructions, after which you can flood the place again.
In any case it will start off as more time consuming than regular projects.

If you guys want, we can setle a day, send me your world map, I would setup a temporary server on my computer (no need for premium users), we would all jump and in the end you would get your result back.
What about that?

How does one send a world map to someone else? A save file through email?

If you go to where thegame is installed (which should be somewhere in user files AppData/Roaming) there is a folder called "Saves" and in it there should be a folder (or multiple folders if you have many different single player maps) that contains all the the progress in the map so far. .zip (or better yet .rar) the folder and uploaded to somesite like rapidshare (ps. get a username so you can remove the file later) give me he link and I will download it. I will try to setup the server so you with it (I have done it with my own maps, just never tryed with people over online) and we are good to go, we can even use cheats (but I will also need your usernames, so I can run them on a white list basis). Once we are done I can then repackage your map and send it back to you so you can play it ofline.

Here is a good idea.. I will be in the chat, I will try to setup a server with my map. If you are there i can give you the details and wee all join in for a test run.

Yes. In Windows machines it's in the secret %appdata% folder, somewhere. In OS X it's under Application Support/minecraft/saves.

MGK, I've bought Minecraft now. So hop around the LoR server and show me your magic

EDIT: Uhh, your friend must update to 1.5 then :)

Hytegia, I was wondering if I could have a save of yours with one of your underwater cities? Just to see what you mean.

Now that I've bought MC you can show me your incredible skills of underwater engineering,
