Minecraft

Graphically the game doesn't look anything special, but it is terribly adicting. I don't have it for very long, I am doing a Condo on a mountain face by the regular pickhax method (I don't have the game for very long, and I have to mine the materials). But that looks punny and insignificant compared to the complex mazes I have seen, damn, they build computers and shit. Ok lots of them are done via level editors, inventory hacks and suff like that, but still, I have a life.... Can't imagine what the hell is going trough the head of this people.

Yeh... Me too. And the worst part is that at first I'm having fun, and then by the end I realize I've stopped having fun and am playing solely because it's what I do...

Also this game doesn't look appealing to me in the first place, which is a nice little bonus to keep me away from it.

I managed to stay away from it until now. Then I accidentally watched this video and the ones that follow it:

It look so great! I've spend to much time just watching minecraft videos on youtube. I intend to hold out six months more, until I have finished my phd, though.

I tried the game, but I don't think I actually understood it. I had very limited success doing anything, and was killed rather quickly. I didn't get very far before getting bored with it.

That said, I'm not exactly a gamer type.

You probably need this:

And this:

I found it very boring when didn't knew how to do stuff. Punching away on the sand and getting killed at night isn't very fun.

Oh, I don't know. Sure, it's addictive, but I'm fairly sure it's nothing like WoW. I can feel I've already reached a "tried most of it" stage, where all I'm doing now is mostly working on some projects that I've thought up along the way.

I can chop away at those projects now and then, whenever I want, pause and come back. So it's not so bad, I think.

I haven't tried multiplayer yet.

Is anyone here doing multi?

And if so... what's the objective in multi? :)

I had to do that for a class once... It was far easier (I did it in a program designed to do it where resources were free) and still a horrible horrible pain in the ass... (though I will note that it was 32 bit).

GAH! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO ME?! Now I'm not addicted to minecraft... Nooo, I'm addicted to watching all the minecraft videos on that channel...

On the bright side, watching them play is quite probably more fun than playing, so I still don't have tons of interest in getting the game (also my schedule will NOT accommodate it, nor will it likely accommodate either of my usual coop players).

I am. It's incredibly fun. Far more enjoyable than single player. It's probably best to have hide your base in some way when you play it, though, because if it's a public server people will sometimes nick your stuff and/or destroy your base.

http://minecraftpvp.com hosts public no-rules servers that allow you to more or less do whatever you like.
To get onto them, just copy/paste the web addresses listed at the right hand side of the page into the server IP bit on Minecraft. There are usually a few people online on any of their servers.

Me, my brother and a couple of friends also have our own little private server where you need to type in an IP address to get in, which is the one I'm usually on. It's good fun just to build towers, castles houses, lairs, contraptions etc. So far I'd say the area showing obvious signs of human tampering is about a square kilometre or so across, although there are sizeable gaps. My brother seems to enjoy making minecart networks to and from the different bases and caves that run entirely automatically.

The more elaborate the traps, the more I enjoy getting to the treasure at the end. :D

That said, I just left a sign saying something like 'Too easy, hide your stuff better' rather than stealing items.

As such, I know that if you want to hide your treasures don't hide the entrance to your treasure room under a fountain, at a corner etc. Just stick it in a hole in the ground and put smooth stone on top so it doesn't look suspicious.
Hiding your chest under a certain tree also tends to work well, you just have to remember which tree it was. :p

That's what we did on the badger minecraftpvp server. We found a natural cave, covered the roof with dirt then dug into the wall of the cave behind a small outcrop. Kept digging until we found a lava lake and decided to set up camp there since the lava meant we didn't have to faff around with more torches.
One of the neat things about that server is that you can set a "home" location by typing /sethome in the chat. Then whenever you type in /home you'll instantly appear there, but leave behind a portal for ten seconds that someone can follow you through. That way you can get to base easily even if it's 1,000,000 blocks away, but you can't chicken out of a fight.

Unfortunately for us, we came back one day to find what looked like a creeper blast in the roof of the natural cave. All our stuff was gone and the signs inside read things like "LOL FOUND YOU". We reckon a creeper probably detonated nearby and its intended victim found the base entrance behind the outcrop.

There's also the issue that people can see your names, unless you're sneaking.

They can't see your name when you're sneaking? :O
I did not know this. I shall try it out right away

That one's wrong. I've tracked down many a person by watching their name through the wall. Not sure about the other.

Okay, I'm intrigued now.... and scared. Suddenly I realize that there may be many, many things I want to build, in giant scale, one tiny block after another. :!:  :ugeek: FML!

Build a full-scale replication of the world of pokemon. Here's a map. Get to it.

Actually that would be pretty cool and nostalgic...
NO! YOU HAVE WORK TO DO! BAD NASH! STOP THINKING THESE THINGS!

Okay, so I heard that the guy behind this game is considering opening up the code and leaving it in the hands of the community sometime in the future. My guess is that it's bound to get even more addictive by then. Who know? Maybe there will be mods that let you truly create any world. So not only could you build the entire Pokemon map, but you'll also be able to catch them and play like in the old GB game?

BTW, is this game download only?

Oooooh! IDK whether or not if you can dress up your character, but we should all dress like gods while we build and be literal/virtual creationists!
