Okies! I am philosophically inclined toward the free (and open source) software movement and its aims. I help out where and when I can, so I guess some of me is in it. That being the case, I am obviously biased, however, the three factors that I feel are important for this conversation are
A) You can boot Linux off a live CD or USB to have a play with it (most distros), dual boot or there's Unetbootin (installs within your Windows partition - can be removed with regular remove software tool within Windows).
B) It doesn't cost any money
C) Most of the pre-installed software is better than that offered elsewhere (Gedit, I'm looking at you, baby), and Linux has had curated "app stores" for bloody ages; we call them repositories (well, us Debian fanboys do). They also don't cost money.
Of course, these aren't the selling points. If you're looking for a solution to a particular software paucity, I can tell you the equivalents if they exist.
I will also note that if you chose Ubuntu (or similar Debian-based distros like Mint), you're unlikely to have to ever use a terminal (although why wouldn't you? It's so bloody quick...) or edit config files these days.
Also, Im using Vista at the moment, with no free access to 7, so getting a more current slash up to date system is really the chief of my objectives with this.
Well, I hear 7 is pretty decent, but it's about to be superseded by a monstrosity... Namely, 8.
Also, a tease!
