Thinking of changing OS

By all means, if anyone has some strong and possibly unpopular opinions about their operating system of choice, then say it.

Okies! I am philosophically inclined toward the free (and open source) software movement and its aims. I help out where and when I can, so I guess some of me is in it. That being the case, I am obviously biased, however, the three factors that I feel are important for this conversation are

A) You can boot Linux off a live CD or USB to have a play with it (most distros), dual boot or there's Unetbootin (installs within your Windows partition - can be removed with regular remove software tool within Windows).
B) It doesn't cost any money
C) Most of the pre-installed software is better than that offered elsewhere (Gedit, I'm looking at you, baby), and Linux has had curated "app stores" for bloody ages; we call them repositories (well, us Debian fanboys do). They also don't cost money.

Of course, these aren't the selling points. If you're looking for a solution to a particular software paucity, I can tell you the equivalents if they exist.

I will also note that if you chose Ubuntu (or similar Debian-based distros like Mint), you're unlikely to have to ever use a terminal (although why wouldn't you? It's so bloody quick...) or edit config files these days.
Also, Im using Vista at the moment, with no free access to 7, so getting a more current slash up to date system is really the chief of my objectives with this.

Well, I hear 7 is pretty decent, but it's about to be superseded by a monstrosity... Namely, 8.

Also, a tease!

I considered waiting and paying for that, but an observation I made is that every other Windows product seems to fall into unpopular opinions, such as people liking 98 but not 2000/ME, yay XP boo vista, and with 7 being shed in a decent light I want to hear that 8 is good before/if I invest (at least on the desk top, which also runs Vista)

CLI Linux

It's the only way to do absolutely everything.
Plus, if you can use it for everyday tasks you'll pretty much be able to nab your Linux+ certification and feel like a hacker forever.

Plus, you can literally do anything with it and it doesn't do shit that you don't ask it to automatically.

Protip: "halt" is a good prank - but it is not your friend.

True dat.

I like to think of this in a way to gauge how annoying a computer is.
Imagine you just popped a disc into the drive.

Mac: "ZOMG STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING. I need your FULL attention!"
Me: "WHAT?! WHAT'S UP?!"
Mac: "I'M PLAYING THIS DISC AND DOWNLOADING THE DRIVERS ISN'T THAT FUCKING AWESOME?!"

Me: *Closes and goes back to Facebook.*

==============

Windows: "Yo DUUUUUUUUUDE."
Me: *Browsing Facebook... Ignoring*
Windows: "DUUUUUDE. DUUUUUUUUUUUDE. DUDE. DUDE. BRO. BROOOOO. BRAH. BROSEPH. BRODINI. BROOOOOO~!"
Me: "WHAT THE FUCK, MAN?!"
Windows: "... I'm installing the drivers. Can I use your HD?"
Me: "... Really? Well, it's great you asked - but couldn't you have just waited like 5 minutes?"
Windows: "... DUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE."

==============

Linux: "Oh? You put a disc in? That's cool."
Me: "... So, you're not going to do anything?"
Linux: "What? I'm not your mother - and if you really wanted me to start you could just type in a few commands and we could get going."
Me: "Thanks bro."
Linux: "SHUT UP you're trying to beat Zork - remember?!"
Me: "Ah. Got it. Throw Knife at troll."
Linux: "You died."
Me: "Fuck. Ah well."

About using Mac OS X on other computers, here's the thing - when you buy a copy of the OS you're not buying a private copy nearly as much as you are just licensing the software for private use. That makes Hackintoshes illegal, since you're violating Apple's terms and agreements. Technically, they COULD sue you. Psystar is a great example of that.

I had the dubious luck of needing a new PC a few months before the release of Win7. Vista is a piece of shit but i'm way too cheap to buy a copy of 7, so I set up a dualboot with Fedora instead. It's so much better that it doesn't even bear comparison. These days I only sign into windows to play games which Linux wont support.

Oh shit, forgot about this. Well, I guess slamming your laptop shut so hard you wreck the hard drive will kind of push these things from your mind. That makes, let's see, two laptops in less than a year? And that was my old backup lappy, as the first wasn't covered by the warranty, so I'm tethered to the wall for any internetting I do from here on out. I guess I can start fresh when I get a new one, and just dive in to a brand new OS, but 'til then I can only stew over my lost porn collection (like, gigs, man).

Oh, and once I convince myself I lack the skill to properly fix it, I'll put the computer back together and send it off office space style (sans the processor, and other still-good parts). Pics, if I remember.

If your computer has a SLIC version high enoguh, you can install win7 oem on your existing license.

Santa was nice to me, got a lap top with Windows 8 on it. Getting used to it, so far better than Vista, but I'll wait until I actually do stuff to try and form an opinion.

The only thing that bugs me is that it's all geared towards mobiles, and as such everything is referred to as "Apps." Remember when they were called "programs?" Is that going to be one of those things I say when I'm old that they make fun of old people for saying? I've also noticed my Facebook page is completely messed up, and I think it's the mobile display (don't have a smart phone, wouldn't know) because of some OS-dictated setup.

I am going to make a brief un-useful comment:

I got Linux and I've never looked back. Windows runs like a tranquillised sloth compared to it....

Aaaaand, I'm already disappointed. Better than Vista as far as not being an idiot-proof yet still easily fuck upable, but it's harder to navigate and still quite slow and unresponsive, as you put it, Laurens. Still trying to get my firewall turned on, as it so eagerly tells me should be done, but the 'turn on' button does nothing. I will have to read up on Linux because life should not be like this D:<

The new laptop is great, though, has an AMD A-6 processor at 2.7 GHz, and a decent Radeon HD graphics card. Don't know if that's all special nowadays but definitely better than my last computer. So there's that.

I also see that I was going to take a bat or something to my old dead one, but I ended up having way more fun taking it apart and putting it back together. Still wouldn't work, didn't expect it to, but I learned a lot about laptop construction and how to remove components that break easily. Or how not to, at least.
