I bought myself a gun!! Woooo!!!!

I can't act this excited in front of my wife, or else she's really going to regret this whole gun thing. Plus, I'm impatient and I have to suffer through a waiting period. So I paid today and can't pick it up until Thursday. I'm going to have to work really hard to not act too impatient.

This is going to be sort of a rough couple of days.

So... umm... what are you going to do with it?

I'm going to walk around my house saying "BANG!" really loud until the cops show up?

Home defense, bud. I'm moving to a much less safe area and I'll feel more comfortable with a gun in the house. Then I can shoot bad guys!! :D

It's strange to think that in the... developed world (for want of a better word), people actually feel the need for a weapon for safety reasons. I'm sure its the case in some parts of this country too, but it still seems odd to me. I've never been to a place I've felt genuinely unsafe, where I've thought "should I take a knife?" or anything like that.

Well... you live in a civilized country, right? I'm an American. Things are a bit less cool and groovy here, especially depending on where you live.

Also, to be fair I've wanted to get back into shooting for a bunch of years, but I never had enough of a good reason to invest the approximately $1000 required to do it well and safely. The home defense aspect added to my desire tips the scales. If I were to move to a safer neighborhood, I'd probably consider selling the gun.

I reckon buying an Optimus Prime doll has much the same effect.

Really? That's just... weird. If you had said "G1 Megatron" it would have at least been on-topic in some way.

True, but I never had him so can't speak to the experience.

Did you at least have a Shockwave? A Nerf gun? A Super Soaker? Something gun-shaped?

I had some of the vehicles from M.A.S.K. if that counts...

Not really.

Anyways, guns and toys don't belong in the same conversation. You could totally blow your brains out if you mix up the two... or on the other hand experience the most embarrassing mugging possible. Or both, if the second one happens first.

Quite. I am likening you initial glee to the receipt of toys as a child. I'm not sure exactly what kind of reaction you'd expect... ;)

A handy visual guide:

Handgun

I hope this clears things up.

Oh... combined with your expression of disapproval, I was half-convinced that you wanted me to stave off a robber with a toy robot. Possible, but not as efficient as a gun.
