Egyptian riots

arg-fallbackName="nasher168"/>
There are rumours going around, according to Al Jazeera, that the President's wife and son have fled to Saudi Arabia. If it is the case, then that's a good indication that Mubarak himself might make a run for it fairly soon.
I guess it'll probably be decided, one way or the other, by the end of next week.

Well Al Jazeera's license has been pulled in Egypt it seems, so no more live broadcasts from them from Egypt.

Do you have to say that word? It brings about a nasty image you know. :/

Anyhow, People power. ^^

There is a wide gulf between not being allowed to do something and not doing it... lol.

According to the feed linked by Hytegia:

The army have come down firmly on the side of the protesters by pledging not to oppose them. Mubarak could be well and truly screwed without the army. The army also seem to have gathered in Tahrir Plaza in Cairo.
Also, El Baradei has been named by the opposition movements (including the Muslim Brotherhood) as an interim president if and when Mubarak is forced out. El Baradei has already vowed not to let the Muslim Brotherhood a disproportionate amount of power. He is apparently heading to Tahrir Square himself as I type.

This is pretty cool. The looting is a bit of a damper, though...

The looting deeply concerns me, as does the Muslim Brotherhoods "offer" to help be a major part of the new government. I'm watching the same video, and the military is sounding more like it is an impartial force atm. They have arrested some and are restricting the rioting/gathering in some ways but are not actually cracking down.

There we go.

I knew I'd seen/heard something about the military.
Al Jazeera said:
In Suez, Al Jazeera's Jamal ElShayyal reported that 1,000-2,000 protesters had gathered, and that the military was not confronting them.

ElShayyal quoted a military officer as saying that troops would "not fire a single bullet on Egyptians".

That might not reflect the top official's position on the matter, I suppose. But it certainly implies that the soldiers on the ground are more loyal to the protesters than Mubarak.

Re: The Situation in Cairo - Live

I'm a bit nervous for the military situation. The police forces have been corrupt for a great length of time, and the military troops have been accepted as a better option. I worry about the schism that is likely when the military leadership gives orders that the troops on the ground would not like to enforce.

Re: The Situation in Cairo - Live

Might as well be. Hang on...

EDIT:
Hmmm... this is trickier than expected...

EDIT again:
Dammit... I seem to have accidentally merged but not left a shadow topic in place. Sowwy :(

EDIT once more:
There we go. There should now be a "Moved:" link to this thread in the News subforum. Everyone's a winner.

This would be why they are still broadcasting:

Its nice to have an actual organisation defying this president.

I find the actions of Al Jazeera to be quite admirable (regardless on whether they are economically motivated) defying the governments informational blackout the keep reporting though withholding the identities of their reporters

I still have no idea what motivated those looters to go for the museum's mummys. Kudos to the protesters who defended it.

I spoke to my mum 20 mins ago, they aren't sure if they'll have to cancel or not at the moment. The travel agent says that they wait till a week before they are due to go before cancelling (they'll get a full refund btw). See what happens I guess, but I think you're right.

My mum and dad aren't upset by this of course. My mum has been to Egypt before and has seen that the country needs change and she is supporting the protesters.
