Why is the Earth Round?

arg-fallbackName="CommonEnlightenment"/>
Hrm.....

Something tells me I can see a sort of pseudo experiment with some playdoh and a rotating stick moving in an elliptical pattern starting to take shape here......

Hi Stripe.

I can't say this without being blunt: you're (still) being an idiot. Your presence here has had no value whatsoever. You're absolutely useless as a person.

So you're banned. Goodbye.

That's unnecessarily harsh, Gnug215.

1) His presence here has been of value - to all parties;
2) No-one is useless as a person - absolutely or otherwise.

kindest regards,

James

Well Yeah. People already acuse us of being ban happy as it is. I mean being miss informed and unclear about his intentions is not really a good reason for banning.

No, but being purposefully obtuse, willfully dishonest and completely disinterested in rational or serious disussion is. He had already been banned temporarily on two other occasions for the same thing, clearly the second longer ban taught him nothing. Gnug is right, he added nothing to this forum besides snide remarks and an overuse of smileys.

If people want to accuse us of being ban happy they're welcome to try. However I have the ban list and I call bullshit. Hardly anyone is banned here, the amount of shit people get away with here is phenomenal.

I found him funny. Honestly there is comedy value in people like him when you know not to take them too seriously. And at least he didn't (t my knowledge) post so damn long posts which you fall asleep trying to read, unlike some.

Gnug, can we get a big green "GNUG SMASH PUNY (insert category here)" next time you ban someone? Pretty please?

Granted, one might be "purposefully obtuse, wilfully dishonest and completely disinterested in rational or serious discussion" - those would have been a perfectly valid expression of dissatisfaction with Stripe's manner and a acceptable reason for banning him.

Stripe's presence at least allowed others to argue with him, regardless if it was effective or not. We should not expect anyone to change instantly - even those who are willing to change. The fact that neither side in the discussions budged an inch is to be expected when both sides believe - rightly or wrongly - that they have the right of an argument: Stripe was just another "Tortucan".

I just disagree with Gnug's particularly labelling him as being "absolutely useless as a person": it's uncalled for from anyone, especially a moderator.

James

Yes, I was unnecessarily harsh.

His posts were always unnecessarily idiotic, annoying, pointless, and yes, useless.

Sure, an opposing view is nice to have around, as you talk about in your other post, and that wasn't what bothered me, as I am sure you realize. What bothered me was his non-condusive manner of "communicating". To put it in another, more familiar way: he was a troll, in most senses of the term.

And clearly, coming back from another LONG term ban, he showed he had learned nothing.

Seriously, tell me that this post from him isn't totally juvenile, trollish, idiotic and useless:

Really, who comes back from a 5 month ban (I believe it was) just to pull moronic stuff like this? A troll, pure and simple.

And so, here, to me, he has shown himself to be a totally useless person. Poster, if you prefer, but I have no qualms treating trolls excessively harshly.

And well, I suppose I am pretty ban happy. At least, I've been quite happy with my bans. I feel all of them have been quite justified, and if anything, we gave many people way too much time.

While some of the others we've banned actually sparked some debate, this useless troll mostly just sparked annoyance and didn't really respond with anything other than a single, irrelevant, useless sentence and some random smiley.

Personally, I didn't find him annoying - just childish.

And his posts could indeed be described as being useless - but to extend that to him as a person is not justifiable.

You might call his poor communication skills as those of a troll - but, again, that does not mean he's useless in toto.

This is, perhaps, why I disagree with banning someone who doesn't post the way people expect or want.

Like Tsar - I'd have liked to continue talking to him.

Yes, his posts were, at times, pointless smoke-and-mirrors - in keeping with his stated purpose (elsewhere) that he was a troll - but he slipped up in his final post here, eventually exposing himself to real attack in terms of our being able to take his post apart - yet it was at this very point that he was banned for posting a clearly stupid comment!

Stripe would have continued posting unconducive posts, until he either got fed up with no-one rising to the bait - if he were a troll - or would eventually post something that could be taken apart.

One way or the other, he'd be the one to change.

As long as we don't lose our composure. [The fact that he irritated you shows that he got what he wanted, if he was a troll: a reaction.]

A troll can be advised to post something relevant and/or arguable - and then ignored by everyone until they do or they get bored, and leave.

Personally, I'm against banning - though I accept that it is the prerogative of TPTB: just so long as it's for the right reasons and not a dismissal of the poster as a person.

Kindest regards,

James

Stripe is hysterical you should keep him around for the laughs.
What he would eventually get around to talking about would be Walt Brown's HydroPlate Theory.
A very deep and all ecnompassing bit of Creationist Explainafication.

Stripe is pretty deep into it.

This board of yours isn't exactly bursting into flames from the traffic load.

Certainly - and it's up to all to encourage posters to replace quantity with quality - if a poster is banned, they never get the chance to change.

Uh, so three total bans (two temp, one perm) isn't enough? I'm not about to turn all my four cheeks...

I'm not suggesting that anyone do - just ignore the trollish posts until the poster posts something worth a response.

Ignore inanity - reward quality/substance.

It's just like training dogs: ignore errors - reward wanted behaviour.

He wasn't going to change, he had no intention of engaging in serious debate and when said debate was attempted he consistently resorted to not answering questions and using snide unfunny quips in lieu of actual content. If we were to ignore his inanity we would have had to ignore all his posts, he posted nothing but inane nonsense.

He had ample opportunity to engage with us, he declined on multiple occasions. He's made his own bed, now he can go annoy other forum.

After 252 posts, you STILL expect him to change? Maybe I'm once again sleep deprived (BTW, just arrived in Sweden, no more driving, yaaay!) but that doesn't strike me as a sane position to hold. As far as I remember, this isn't even Stripe's first account... Didn't he have one before and got banned on that, too?
No, after some time you just have to throw out the rotten apple and use its leftovers as compost for the rest to bloom. Stripe, in case I didn't make myself clear, was a rotten apple.
