I just abandoned my attempt to try the Battlefield 3 Beta. Looks like it can only be downloaded through the EA spyware installer. Won't put that on my system.
I tried to avoid it... But it's Battlefield! So I could not. :(

Alpha Centauri. Its basically civilization 3 in space. I'm very proud of myself with my current file; I never attacked anyone without provocation, my tech is way ahead of the opposition, and not one nuke was built. I believe Ive toted its values elsewhere here, but if you've never heard its awesome and you need to play it for the sake of your mental health. Frankly, I seem to be coming on to the belief that it holds the key to the secrets of the universe, as I will start playing and seconds later the rest of the universe has advanced by hours. If I continue playing, however, I fear I may end up burying my children after they die, decades of living in poverty and sub-par sanitary conditions following WWIII and the subsequent breakdown into anarchy taking its toll on their psyches, myself experiencing only enough time to have to go pee again. So yeah, check it out.

SMAC rocks!

I love how they managed to implement a story into a Civ frame. It really gave the game a different feel.

I think one of my main complaints (which is quite superficial and minimal) is that the terrain was rather drab, especially the red areas.

But yeah, an awesome game that I think deserves a sequel - or even just some kind of update.

Oh, and yeah, I'm currently playing Mass Effect. Just finished the first game, installing the second as I post this. (It's dl'ing on Steam.)

The first one was pretty good, I really liked the story, the characters and the large universe, but I still have a number of criticisms.

For one, the combat system feels iffy. The "3rd person, cover based shooter" thing is pretty crappy, in my opinion. Of course, I never managed to master it, so there is that. I just suck, so I am biased. But there doesn't seem to be all that much skill or fun involved in standing behind a cover and then periodically popping out to hit a target which for the most part is doing the same as you are.

The inventory system isn't very intuitive. The "long list of items you can scroll through" is a really unimaginative way of setting up an inventory, and it makes it hard to keep track of what you have, and how good it is.

The skills system seems rather limited, so room for improvement there, too.

Also, and I know this isn't easy to do, but it seems no one is able to make a good 3D map. The "2D map in a 3D world" is really confusing in many cases.

Anyway, about to play ME2 now. Hope they have improved the things I've mentioned.

In my opinion ME2 was much improved over the first, but I love both games and will be buying ME3 next month.
