That association is just a nifty coincidence.
The real term is derived from a fishing technique. Trolling in fishing is a technique in which you manually pull the line through the water, leading the fish to believe the bait is the real-deal and bite down.
Trolling on the internet is the same thing. You're fishing for emotional responses.
