Scientific Illiteracy

note a conversation between me and a coworker, after she was complaining that her doctor wouldn't give her anything for her cold:

me: they can't give you antibiotics for a cold

her: they can give me penicillin!

me: thats an antibiotic. it doesn't kill viruses. viruses cause colds

her: ...

this is scary to me. its such a basic fact, pretty relevant to modern life, and she has NO CLUE.

i wonder how this kind of thing happens. the same with creationists claiming the world is 6000 years old or some durn fool insisting on the dichotomy between microevolution and macroevolution. the science involved is pretty simple. is it that its not taught in school, or that people don't care about it and forget? or, in the case of creationists, are they simply blinded by ideology?

how many people are getting swine flu vaccinations that don't really need them, because they are panicked?

on the other side, how many people are claiming that vaccines kill people. lmao.

i guess this is pretty rambly, but i am honestly wondering what could cause such mass ignorance.

Well you think the doctor could have explained why she doesn't get antibiotics for a cold. At least the doctor refused they used to just give in and prescribe them anyway.

I'm going to make a company that produces sugar pills and markets it to doctors as placebos for people who don't even bother to understand that antibiotics don't work for viruses...

It's inherent to the system at play. Fluoride plays a pretty big part here, as well as the processed foods [Additives] people eat, but you'll disregard this because of how rare and mind blowing this fact is.
Food = Behaivor = Health
We are based within biologically driven and chemically dependent bodies, after all...

Borr, that's called homeopathy.

Wait a second, if your 'fact' is so rare and mind blowing, then why is it spouted on every single conspiracy theory website out there?

So let me get this straight, people are ignorant because they have strong and healthy teeth? It has nothing to do with a religiously mired society that praises ignorance as a blessing and upbringings that chastise intelligence, it's all the flouride in the water. I guess we were all so much smarter before that happened, what with the dark ages and all, and of course all of those countries who don't fluoridate their water are doing so much better in the social and intelligence department.

What's even funnier is that the guy who insists that taking colloidal silver is healthy thinks that flouride is unhealthy. That...is...hilarious.

And what happened to "We are all spiritual beings, yada yada."

Niocan, you're not even being internally consistent anymore. I officially evoke shenanigans. Nobody's as stupid and as dense as you are, nobody.

That was more sarcasm then anything . I think we can agree that it's an alternative topic and, by title, isn't discussed nearly as much as other issues..

Topically, sodium fluoride does work as intended; Why anyone would ever want to subject their internal bodies to that by-product I'll never know. By the way, I'll take the bet that most if not all city municipalities of the US / Canada and eastern Europe don't use the naturally occurring Calcium fluoride.

Attacking the body, the mind, and numbing the spirit. Why subject just one part of the society with this reflection of our problems [What most call NWO, it's a rose by any other name...] when it shows itself where it can [Metaphorically speaking].

I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make with the dark ages, but have you checked the differences of reported cavities between the two countries? I've heard the figure of only a 1/2 cavity is saved by fluoridating the water supply.

I stand on the position that using dosages of CS per day for x time, whatever the case may be, is far safer (however you view the safety of CS) then going out of our way and adding sodium fluoride to the very veins of those cities. Subjecting any random person to an unregulated (from the stand point that it's in almost everything to some small degree) by-product for the sole purpose of protecting your teeth by 1/2 a cavity is complete bullshit in my humblest of opinions.

Aw I thought you of all people would notice ;)
We are [Spiritual beings] based within biologically driven and chemically dependent bodies, after all...
That doesn't mean we just can't forget about the moving self-sustaining sack of organs in a calcium cage that is our body

You're always free to think what thou wilt.

No, Trolls don't necessarily need to be b&d, but it's important to deprive them of the lulz they get by riling up conflict and facepalming.

And how does one go about that?

It seems by projecting your own ignorance on another to provoke them into being angry is a good start.. It's sad to see what you'll resort to scalyblue.

I personaly don't know where did you get all this bullshit, but I suspect that you read one of those books writen by some crackpot that is completly clueless about the subject and decided to spout his ignorance, and all you do is to grab this ignorance and act has if you had some specially revealed thing about health issues. And I bet you can't even tell the difference between a virus and a bacteria (which is basic requierment for anyone trying to pronouce about this topic).
You have extreme missunderstadings about chemestry and biology (more in health related topics, but you fail science in general), that could have been avoided if you just haven given the trouble of geeting at least a high school level education.
And now i'm here finding myself having to tell you that you must not pronounce yourself about any science topics period, not only because you are completly ignorant about the topics at hand but also because you give potentialy harmfull advises to people (and your track record so far isn't good).

If you want to participate in this board please do so some place else, heck not everyone is cutout to be a scientist.

I'm not a scientist, but I love science. I think the difference between Niocan & myself is that I appreciate and employ the process of inquiry, Especially here where there are some nice, informative and indeed well informed people. An open mind is a fun toy. :D

It's going to be down to the kids not paying attention in science lessons, they decry the subject for being boring and switch off.

So it's their own fault for not getting it.

I dunno, I was bored in history class until 11th grade 2nd semester, when, for the first time in my life, I got a history teacher who made history *interesting*. I aced both of his history courses, and still have a rough understanding of what he taught me (history is hard, because it's just a bunch of isolated facts, rather than lines of reasoning). My point being that the specific teacher makes a big difference in whether a student considers a subject boring or not.
