note a conversation between me and a coworker, after she was complaining that her doctor wouldn't give her anything for her cold:
me: they can't give you antibiotics for a cold
her: they can give me penicillin!
me: thats an antibiotic. it doesn't kill viruses. viruses cause colds
her: ...
this is scary to me. its such a basic fact, pretty relevant to modern life, and she has NO CLUE.
i wonder how this kind of thing happens. the same with creationists claiming the world is 6000 years old or some durn fool insisting on the dichotomy between microevolution and macroevolution. the science involved is pretty simple. is it that its not taught in school, or that people don't care about it and forget? or, in the case of creationists, are they simply blinded by ideology?
how many people are getting swine flu vaccinations that don't really need them, because they are panicked?
on the other side, how many people are claiming that vaccines kill people. lmao.
i guess this is pretty rambly, but i am honestly wondering what could cause such mass ignorance.
