The catholic church makes it easy to leave due to its nature, it is a religion founded on hate, mysoginy, murder, genocide and other idiotic ideas. The fact that they are changing (or rather masking) these ideas just makes it that much harder for people to see them for what they realy are, that is what apologists are all about, making their nonsense more palatable so that more people will believe so they give them money.
The day that the Pope goes, "We are stoping tithes effective immediately and selling everything to pay for the victims of our wrong doings, from now on priesthood will not be compensated economically" then I will believe it's all in good faith, untill then I think it is just a publicity stunt.
I can understand your resentment, I'm not a fan of the Vatican either---far from it.
However your original sentiment seemed to be one of overwhelming indignation at the Pope's statement, rather than anything else. My point was that previous Popes have said far worse things, and that the Vatican has a whole list of things that you could get worked up about before you get to the fact that the Pope just said atheists can go to heaven.
