Nick Clegg has recently been quoted on his Twitter as stating:
The North? Sheffield? The planned High Speed Rail route only goes so far North as Leeds! It seems that the people of Scotland and major cities such as Newcastle are going to be left in the cold. If anything, the planned HSR route should extend down from Scotland (Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh?) all the way down through Birmingham to London and then extend West to Cornwall. Thus, connecting the whole country together and allowing further extensions to branch from the central 'backbone' into areas such as East Anglia and Wales.
Bottom line, if we're going to have such a system, lets make sure that it's available to most of the country! Not just the areas between London and Leeds.
