Plans for a High Speed Rail Network leave much to be desired

Nick Clegg has recently been quoted on his Twitter as stating:
Nick Clegg said:
I'm delighted Sheffield is to be included in the high speed rail route, it's a clear sign of our commitment to creating jobs in the north

The North? Sheffield? The planned High Speed Rail route only goes so far North as Leeds! It seems that the people of Scotland and major cities such as Newcastle are going to be left in the cold. If anything, the planned HSR route should extend down from Scotland (Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh?) all the way down through Birmingham to London and then extend West to Cornwall. Thus, connecting the whole country together and allowing further extensions to branch from the central 'backbone' into areas such as East Anglia and Wales.

Bottom line, if we're going to have such a system, lets make sure that it's available to most of the country! Not just the areas between London and Leeds.

Shamelessly self advertised from my own blog: http://mraverz.blogspot.com/

One would hope that if they build it and it is successful then more routes will follow, although that's probably being over-optimistic. In any case it's not a network until they build more than one route. ;)

The only way you can build a decent network is if you have a decent base to build it on.

The current route, isn't exactly perfect for expansion in my view.

Yeah. Also it does seem very zig-zaggy. Going across to Birmingham then up to Leeds is not exactly a direct route even without considering that it should really be going to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

They should have used slime mold to plan the optimal routes :D

It doesn't even go through Birmingham to get to Leeds, it branches off slightly.

Lol, we can't even build rail networks that can handle stray leaves, never mind high speed.

Apparently, there's a rail link to be built by 2030 (!!!??!) which will be London to Edinburgh in 2 hours.

Granted, Sheffield is still left out in this one but Liverpool is at least included.
