I've had to resort to using servers which are all very friendly, but people don't take a hint when you say you'd like some space:
"Can I build a house here?"
]No, that's where the watchtower will be."
"How about here?"
"No, that's where the enormous lava pit will be."
"I'll help you build your village!"
"Bitch! I'm not even making a village! I walked for 15 minutes to find this place so I could be away from your ridiculous towns built with hacked materials! There's the horizon; build on the other side of it!"

Have you guys tried Hardcore Mode yet?
It really does a good job of making you feel like MineCraft is the hardest game in existence. No longer can you simply blaze through and slice enemies, then when you die come back and grab your gear...
1 Life - then Map Deletion. Permanent Hard Difficulty. And low hunger will KILL you (not knock you down to 1/2 a heart - kill you. Straight up)
Farming, taming animals, and the mastery of the environment have become necessities to survival.
It fucking sucks - and the Nether itself is an actual and literal hell to enter. It gives you a chill down your spine that makes you just want to build a fortress in the Nether so you have somewhere to run away from monsters to. I killed one of those delightful djinns and made a potion stand and an enchanting table in my library (for boosts).
I'm currently attempting to get enough levels to enchant a single set of armour and weapons, as well as building a tower fortress, so that I can finally enter the End with the knowledge that I did everything right and can face the End with no regrets about how I played it...
And the End? I'll see when I get there.
I'm ready for anything, though.

You know, it hadn't occurred to me that a playthrough of Minecraft was now possible until you said that...

Damn, though. It takes fucking ages. I started off in a snowy area and set up a shit hovel in a little cave of the sort that riddle tundra biomes. Then moved into a wooden hut and made an iron chestplate early-on in order to better survive. Farming is difficult because water freezes outside, so I had to make an indoor farm instead. I think animal farming is the way forward, tbh.
