And Linux does have an DirectX equivalent it's called OpenGL, Apple uses it ;)

I should preface that statement with "the prolifieration of DirectX" lol.

I'd love for that to happen, but it's not even true on OSX. YET!! :)

I think the other reason these attitudes prevail is that Linux doesn't come OEM on new computers so a lot of people won't take the time to create a liveCD of debian or fedora. I think Ubuntu is on the right track with their deployments: http://techie-buzz.com/foss/ubuntu-oem-deal.html

Once an OS is already installed, non saavy users won't really change it or wipe it. Ubuntu is a good starting point for people to get into Linux or GNOME in general. It's only LATER that they learn how much GNOME sucks and then switch to KDE :D

I'm with you though, nothing beats the power of Linux and if they had great gaming application support and a DirectX equivalent then we would grab the gamer market no problem.

Gentoo for life!

hehe... Do not get me started on KDE...

Ubuntu is okay for beginners I guess and a lot of power users like it, but I find it way to bloated (also one of my beefs with KDE). That said, OEM desktops with any Linux distro installed on it kind of takes the fun out of it for me. I am with Aught3 and prefer to build my own desktops.

Gentoo freakin rocks if you have a fast computer and the patients of Job. I installed it on my desktop and it is the fasted distro I have used so far. Thinking about trying Arch next though as they have more up to date packages.

The fact is, Apple sells itself on snobbery... they know their target customer is a douchebag hipster asshole sitting in a Starbucks for 8 hours sucking up the free wifi pretending to be productive and listing to breathy-voiced singer-songwriter bullshit on their giant retro headphones.

Especially the new one priced at a stupidly high pricepoint!!

Yep, which is why my next lappy is going to be a Thinkpad... hehe

Are They still the same as when IBM made them? They were fucking amazing!

I see a lot of turnaround for Lenovos when it comes for repair. My company has over 8,000 employees and I directly manage 1,100 people and all their equipment that's issued out. I'm still a fan of Dell laptops and the modular design makes them easier to repair.

@tuxbox: My only point to the OP is that pushing Linux on an OEM box preinstalled would bring more users to the fold. IMO, it's the best way to bring in the casual user and Ubuntu is primed to bring in the newbies...

**EDIT** Macs are still made with Toshiba parts and 3rd party knockoff mobos...it's hard to get excited by them for me. I mainly look for laptops with Atheros based wifi chipsets so I can keep aircrack-ng rolling like a champ ;D

I still have my IBM ThinkPad A22m that I bought for college. It is too slow to do anything other than web surf and emails, but I freakin loved it back in the day. I was hoping Lenovo had bot mucked up the brand name, but if you say they have a significant failure rate I will have to rethink my decision. I dig Dell lappys as well.

Yeah, I cannot disagree with that logic...

I have noticed many Mac users turn into screaming 12 year old girls if you dare not worship at the altar of Apple. I'm not saying Macs are bad or PCs are better, but I'm not paying ,£2000 for a computer when I can pay ,£500 and both to exactly the same thing.

Hey. I did not scream at people when I was 12.

1)Mac users aren't more elitist than anyone else. 2) Windows users get pretty obnoxious too. I feel that it's just confirmation bias honestly. You only have one company which uses the Mac computer. Windows machines are everything else. Acer, Asus, Vaio, Samsung, Alienware, all of them use Windows. Douchebags stand out more when they are a part of a smaller group.

3) Also, Linux ain't all that hot, I used ubantu in programming. It's easier to actually code with, but it's not all that magnificent compared.

1) I have met a ton of Mac users online and I would have to disagree. Constant Windows bashing and bragging. Buying and using a Mac does not make someone smarter or better yet a ton of them think they are. The comment that asshat made on G+ is very common in geek forums. Now obviously not all Mac users are asshats, but too many of them are and Apple markets their products with the same type of attitude. That said, some of my best friends are Mac users and I never hear them bash MS Windows or Windows user. They just prefer Macs because of its simplicity and design (well made products).

2) True

3) Well with most things in life it is a matter of preference. I use Linux based operating systems for several reasons. 1) It is a fun, 2) it is useful for my line of work, and 3) it is very secure and reliable.

Your whole point pretty much reeks of confirmation bias. Anyone who proudly claims to be or have anything is probably a douchebag no matter what. You see it with national pride, you will see it with Macs. Go over to any sort of windows forums and you'll see the same bull. You'll never see reasonable people say, 'Hey, I have a Mac and it's awesome' unless Macs are brought up. They won't ever be pricks out of the blue.

I always joke that Apple products are fashion accessories, not technology.

The difference between Windows and Mac is growing less and less visible, though. I'm a Linux and Windows user primarily. I have a dual boot. I use Windows 7 for gaming because, lets be honest, I can't be fucked reconfiguring Linux every time I want to play a game. I have lots of games that run smoothly on Linux, though, too, without any special configuration. I use Linux to code, Windows to game. I simply don't have a reason to use MacOS really.

Mac is really good for users in my experience. So is Ubuntu. Actually, I set my father up with Ubuntu several years ago and now he dreads using anything else. He loves Linux.

I've always mocked Macs, not because I have an affection for PC or Linux over it, but because of the stereotypical user - which is a yuppy, not a hipster.

Macs are marketed to yuppies. This isn't a blanket statement - they target businessmen and women who are frustrated by or don't want to learn Windows. They target college students. They don't neglect to include everyone in their marketing, their iPods for instance are marketed to teenagers, but the iPhone and iPad are presented as business solutions. I call them fashion accessories, because they're not fully functional without hacking, while Android and WinMobile devices are. Before those were the Macbooks and so forth that "just work."

Since we started supporting Macs at work, I've encountered more problems with Apple devices than Windows devices. More than half of my calls are for Apple problems, while less than 5% of the devices in the field are Apple. Apple doesn't "just work" - but the bundled software is part of it, rather than trialware for you to buy.. All the "just works" crap means is that there's less configuration needed.

I don't sport a hate-on for Mac, I might give it a try here soon, but I they have the most annoying customers I've encountered (and I'm an FSF member).

Paul Allen kept calling him Marcus Halberstram. Just before Bateman axed him, he's going "Hey Halberstram, why is there newspaper all over the floor? Do you have a dog?"

It was an obscure joke I suppose heh

Of course he did!

It's a shame my head is connected so well to my neck as I would like to hang it lower.
