Mac elitism or snobbery??

What is it with some Mac users that turn them into elite d-bags? Do not get me wrong, we have them in the Linux community as well, but they are usually n00bs who just installed Ubuntu and now think they are l33t (not that Ubuntu sucks, I know a lot of hackers who use Ubuntu). Anyway I was browsing G+ and came across a post with this pic:

....so I started reading the comments and came across this asshat comment:

I just do not get it!? First off a Mac is a PC, so the entire Mac v PC argument is stupid in the first place and second, it has been my experience as an ex-sys admin that there are stupid and ignorant Mac, Windows, and Linux users. Just as there are brilliant users that use one or all three systems.

Anyway, I was bored and had nothing else to so I thought I would post a useless topic, sorry... hehe

I created this stupid gif several years ago to show how pointless the Mac v PC debate really is.

Mac users aren't more elitist than anyone else. Windows users get pretty obnoxious too. I feel that it's just confirmation bias honestly. You only have one company which uses the Mac computer. Windows machines are everything else. Acer, Asus, Vaio, Samsung, Alienware, all of them use Windows. Douchebags stand out more when they are a part of a smaller group.

Also, Linux ain't all that hot, I used ubantu in programming. It's easier to actually code with, but it's not all that magnificent compared.

1) I have met a ton of Mac users online and I would have to disagree. Constant Windows bashing and bragging. Buying and using a Mac does not make someone smarter or better yet a ton of them think they are. The comment that asshat made on G+ is very common in geek forums. Now obviously not all Mac users are asshats, but too many of them are and Apple markets their products with the same type of attitude. That said, some of my best friends are Mac users and I never hear them bash MS Windows or Windows user. They just prefer Macs because of its simplicity and design (well made products).

2) True

3) Well with most things in life it is a matter of preference. I use Linux based operating systems for several reasons. 1) It is a fun, 2) it is useful for my line of work, and 3) it is very secure and reliable.

I have noticed many Mac users turn into screaming 12 year old girls if you dare not worship at the altar of Apple. I'm not saying Macs are bad or PCs are better, but I'm not paying ,£2000 for a computer when I can pay ,£500 and both to exactly the same thing.

+1

Some people are motivated more by aesthetics others by functionality. Apple's stuff looks very clean but it would just irritate me to pay that much and not get any additional performance out of my new equipment. I prefer to build my own PCs which makes maintenance a breeze and use Windows because I'm a fairly avid gamer. I also love to point out the factory conditions in China where Apple products are made, that really bothers the aesthetically motivated people.

Btw, enjoyed this today: http://www.sadanduseless.com/image.php?n=1995

I bet that iPot would make the best iTea ever!

I generally buy whatever product I choose to, and fuck anyone who cares to comment on it. People in general seem to turn stupid when it comes to inane product rivalries like Mac vs PC or Pepsi vs Coke, sports teams, et al. Unless you work for one of those companies or have something to gain from debating the utility or worth of one over the other, you're just making more vain silly noise on the internet and so forth. Rather than rely on internet debates to decide on what to use, do some actual research and try out products for yourself. Can't tell whether this thread isn't just more of that silly noise that's just from the redundant outside perspective. Are you making a case for something or just pointing out something obvious for small talk?

Ahhh yes, fanboys.

They are what's really wrong with this, they are a sad bunch that are just afraid to try something new. Or just got scared of something by the competition.

Sadly they exist everywhere in the tech world, there's no end to them.

The fact is, Apple sells itself on snobbery... they know their target customer is a douchebag hipster asshole sitting in a Starbucks for 8 hours sucking up the free wifi pretending to be productive and listing to breathy-voiced singer-songwriter bullshit on their giant retro headphones.

That's how you see it, but Apple isn't just hipsters.

Their ADVERTISING is aimed at douchebag hipster assholes. That doesn't mean other people can't buy their products. I've got an iPhone and I'm the opposite of hipster. I'm not their target audience.

Frenger is. :)

First of all, their retail stores are everything but hipster.
Second Their advertisement is really broad, not just targeting hipsters.

I'm sorry, I'm being provincial again. Their AMERICAN advertising is pretty much hipster city. I don't know what they do in Denmark.

Nope, their american advertising isn't hipster city. They do target hipsters with some of the ads, but that's not even half. They target families, soccer mums and all sorts of other groups. Apple doesn't advertise here, it's just the shops that sell Apple stuff that advertises for it.

Their ad campaigns are a lot of " This feature with your favorite shit is only available on the iPhone/etc." Or them showing off a feature.

I think the other reason these attitudes prevail is that Linux doesn't come OEM on new computers so a lot of people won't take the time to create a liveCD of debian or fedora. I think Ubuntu is on the right track with their deployments: http://techie-buzz.com/foss/ubuntu-oem-deal.html

Once an OS is already installed, non saavy users won't really change it or wipe it. Ubuntu is a good starting point for people to get into Linux or GNOME in general. It's only LATER that they learn how much GNOME sucks and then switch to KDE :D

I'm with you though, nothing beats the power of Linux and if they had great gaming application support and a DirectX equivalent then we would grab the gamer market no problem.

Gentoo for life!

Yea I got into Linux through Ubuntu.

If you think GNOME sucks, you clearly haven't tried Unity :)

I do remember Dell once shipping computers with Ubuntu preinstalled, but I think they ditched that idea now.

And Linux does have an DirectX equivalent it's called OpenGL, Apple uses it ;)

The problem was that they had only a few, lower spec, models with Ubuntu. If you had a specific model in mind, chances were, that you'd have to buy a windows one and install Linux yourself anyway.

This is my favorite trolling topic on the Facebook pages I own - mainly because whenever I rag hard on Apple devices and such, the usual response that follows is:
"Look at all the poor fags who can't afford a Mac. Lololol."

Or, my favorite:
"Macs are just easier to use!"

Neither of which actually address the point I make for that particular post - which is usually a bit about how either Macs are locked-down pieces of shite that are overpriced or something else along those lines.

In fact...

Enjoy the shitstorm

Locked down? sure....... O wait that's a bit fat lie told by Apple haters.
