The Irish government is trying to introduce a blasphemy law that states : "A person who publishes or utters blasphemous matter shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €100,000."
"Blasphemous matter" is defined as matter "that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion; and he or she intends, by the publication of the matter concerned, to cause such outrage."

Wonder if teaching evolution or indeed any science would be construed as blasphemy now.

I wanted to get this out to forums and let as many people as possible know what is happening. I know most people in this forum are not from Ireland but this could affect you if your ruling imbeciles decide to follow the example of our ruling imbeciles.

If anybody knows any Irish people could you please let them know

'Struth, that doesn't sound any God-damn good. A blasphemy campaign could be fun though.

I am 100% serious here, now is the time to start your own religion and abuse the hell out of that law, do it so bad that they have to repeal it.

That can be hard to define, such subjective laws should never be passed.

Yey.. the Church of Placidity... We want peace and relaxation... We want freedom from commercial signal and impulse triggers.. freedom from advertisement, ranging from billboards to email spam... But also freedom from shouting newspaper headers... freedom from "bad news" items.. freedom from soap operas and other ill conceived drama series on TV... they cause ripples and disturbance in the force of placidity! We deem it blasphemy if these rules are broken! WE WILL TAKE ACTION! WE'LL SUE YOUR BUTTS OFF!

Alright, I hereby declare atheism a religion (hey, the fundies have been saying that for years). Now, I am deeply insulted by the Irish government and just about every fundy who called us immoral, satanists, stalinists, nazis, rapists and baby-killers. I therefore demand...
ONE TRILLION DOLLARS!!!

Given that amount of chaos and entertainment this could spawn if passed, I'm almost in favor of it. Presumably it will go the way of most other blasphemy statutes in the past, once staff lawyers remind legislators how open to abuse it would be, but one can still hope the leading idiots will be dumb enough to pass it this time.

Put me down for a membership in the Church of the Placid Acid, by the way. :geek:

If this passes my first action will to be fly to Ireland, make some super offensive signs (like Jesus taking a shit on the chest of Mary) and phrases like "Muhammad was a baby rapist!" and walk up and down the street yelling at the top of my lungs: "Jesus the Jewish zombie was a cunt!!"

Getting in trouble would be so worth it.

We should organise a parade... & take turns in desacrating bible, tora and quran... &have a with a big wagon showing nonstamcollector vids 24/7... Ahhhh grrreat!

But seriously: the idea of founding a religion, including rites, sermons etc... and add some statutes that make sure the holy books in existence already contain things that have to be seen as an insult to our new religion... and then we sew EVERYBODY.... grrreat!

Make a religion that make every other religion a blasphemy.
This is redundant. You simply need "Make a religion."

Just sayin'...

This law is in direct violation of the interests of the Monarchy and it stands to reason, if it's even considered by their Parliament that the Monarchy will veto it.

That said, Ireland is a member of the United Nations and this law does not surprise me one bit.
Ireland is full of religious nut jobs and drunks. All the sane people leave the country.
