This is really recent... Which thread is miscategorized?Anachronous Rex said:It's been mentioned in Religion/Irreligion.
Neither, it could have gone in either forum depending on how you wanted to portray the issue.JustBusiness17 said:Which thread is miscategorized?
So what differentiates a discussion between the news here and the news in another forum? It must be rather nuanced, no?Aught3 said:Neither, it could have gone in either forum depending on how you wanted to portray the issue.JustBusiness17 said:Which thread is miscategorized?
Not really. If you just want to report on a recent event it goes in the news forum, if you want a discussion on a particular issue raised by the story then your OP probably belongs in a different section. Fairly simple really, but the mods can always shift the topic if needed.JustBusiness17 said:So what differentiates a discussion between the news here and the news in another forum? Ok, so the news forum is where you post recent events where the OP doesn't want to encourage a specific discussion? Is that closer to what you were trying to say?Aught3 said:Strawman!
Tell you what, if you're having trouble pop me a PM when you make a news thread and I'll check if you've got it right.
Excellent question and one which is at the heart of my own confusion.lrkun said:I have a question.
Suposing I was to post a news article. That is my intention. Now someone comments on it, then others comment on it which results to a debate between different individuals. Is it okay that I posted such in the news section or it will be moved to some other section?

So replying in the news forum should be locked and all discussions raised by the story should be posted as new threads in other sections? That actually doesn't sound unreasonable.Aught3 said:Aught3 said:If you just want to report on a recent event it goes in the news forum, if you want a discussion on a particular issue raised by the story then your OP probably belongs in a different section.
What do you mean by 'political'? There's a section for that as well...australopithecus said:You posted it here because you thought it was newsworthy, it was posted in the Religion forum because it's a religious issue. 1 topic, 2 distinct lines of debate. Theological and political. What's not to get?

If debating subjects is the goal, then posting in the 'News' forum is more than a little counter productive. I crunched some numbers to support that claim. I took data from the 5th pages of the 'News' forum and the 'Science and Math' forum (the forum with the smallest number of replies/topic) and found the following results:australopithecus said:If the mods want to move a thread they will, until then perhaps debating the subject rather than debating where the subject should/shouldn't be would be more productive.
I happen to agree and have yet to find the discussion which justified the creation of the news forum. Despite several attempts on my part to get the reasoning behind the decision, nobody has provided any serious justification for it's continued existence. In fact, its apparent that the mods would rather disrespect me as a member of the community than address the issue at hand. This leads me to believe they have absolutely no rationale to support 'News' forum's existence whatsoever. But please, continue to dodge the question and treat me like a leper for no good reason. In fact, after all the fucking hoops you've made me jump through over this rather straight forward concern of mine, I hope you leave the 'News' forum exactly as it is. The costs to the community are more than worth its value in spite [color=#BF0000 said:AndromedasWake[/color]"]1. In the interest of not setting up too many forums (currently considering formal debates and guests area) i'd rather people just post news wherever they feel is relevant. For example, science journalism under science and mathematics. General news is fine in General Discussion.
