Anyone on Rome: Total War?

Does anyone here play Rome: Total War? If not, do so. It is arguably the best RTS game ever made, with all sorts of features, some of which I still haven't properly tried out.
The idea is that in the battles, each side has an army and you have to think tactically, rather than being able to just spam men like in the C&C games. Things like flank attacks, fighting downhill, trajectory of arrows and catapult rocks etc are all taken into account as they would in a real battle.
There is also a single-player, turn-based campaign mode in which you can move your various armies around a map of Europe (including Britain), the Middle-East and Northern Africa, conquering provinces and stuff like that. There is also a very good diplomacy side to it as well.

If you get bored of it, there are also countless mods, an active multiplayer community and other stuff.

If you do play it already, I would welcome a chance to play against or alongside anyone from here.

Wow, that was a quick response!
There's plenty of footage on youtube if you want to see what it's like. Although I have to say youtube rarely does it justice.

I played it for a long time. The most recent version of Medieval II: TW is in fact one of only two games that I've made any time or space for in the last year or so. If it weren't for how games tend to screw up machines, and the fact that my main machine is devoted almost solely to video, audio and visual production apps and raw source files I'd be tempted to reload Rome again.

Then again, the next best thing (and in some ways better) was the site I found (forgotten the name) that allowed one to find live opponents for hex-based wargames which do much the same thing, albeit without the ultrapretty graphics. The plus side being that you were playing against human intelligence instead of cheat-y pseudo-AI.

Thanks for the memories!

I went by Fry's Electronics this afternoon and the only Rome Total War they had was the Barbarian Invasian (only 1.99!) however they didn't have the original so having the expansion seems... kinda useless :p

I'll have to keep looking.

Only RTS games I have are Starcraft, Age of Mythology, Age of Empires 2 (no expansions) and... maybe a few others hiding deep in the desk haha

I may love RTS games but sadly I don't have many

Yeah, it wouldn't have worked without the main game-although the expansion comes with a patch, so there are far less bugs once you get the expansion.

What I mean to say is that I will buy it from Steam, and wait 14 hours for it to download.

Joe have you tried it? I'm interested in trying it to, but I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.

I'm sort of inexperienced at RTS games, so I'm waiting until I have a good 4-5 hours I can devote to it before diving in. The last game remotely like this that I played was Starcraft, 11 years ago.

Damn...you are gonna be all over SC2 right? Man I can't wait!

But yea just let me know...heard Rome: TW was pretty good from some friends and reviews.

Its not a pure RTS, its a TBS with RTS elements. The battles are RTS while the campaign is entirely played as turn based.

That's the sort of distinction I would never have noticed...

You can, in fact, avoid the RTS component completely if you choose to (and in fact there's no RTS for the naval battle elements, only for land battles and end-stage sieges) -- plus there is a pause button, as well as considerable AI if you don't like RTS and are willing to allow the AI to do sometimes costly and stupid maneuvers. I'm guessing you will notice the difference if you decide to play it.

Also, the way that huge battles are worked around is somewhat frustrating, as, even if you have overwhelming numbers of troops available, you are limited to having about 12 or 15 units engaged and under your control at any given time, unless some of those allied with you happen to be under AI control. In some situations this can be incredibly annoying, especially if the opposing force is large and well equipped.

Still, as eye-candy intensive games go, it is one of the best I've played, ever.

Yes, that is one of the only things I dislike about the game, although it is easy to clear up. You can make sure that only 20 units from each army can come onto the battlefield at once (potentially 9600 soldiers in total) by altering the preferences a little bit (if you don't change this, it is possible to have up to about 39000 men on the field in a 5vs4 battle). If you couple this with placing your reinforcements under your personal command, it is very easy to have a completely fair fight (unless the enemy's combined forces outnumber yours, in which case you may take very heavy casualties).

I loved Rome Total War... conquering the known world, enlightening barbarians (well, the ones who didn't get crucified, at least), and forging an empire to last the test of time.

In the end, though, I prefer the newer Empire Total War more. It has more dakka.

Why on earth would I want a fair fight? Whenever possible I try to face my enemies with overwhelming numbers, superior weaponry and armor... and lots of artillery. Fair fights are for Custer. Only my relatively spastic control of the mouse tends to contribute to less than ideal casualty levels... that and my tendency to wait too long before ordering missile troops to cease fire. Most of my casualties tend to come from friendly fire except when I'm unable to avoid an ambush. ;)

Thanks for the tips though... I haven't dug into the configuration in a very long time.
