Why bother?

It seems to me that religion has an enormous grip on believers, and by watching debates or topics that are basically an atheist trying to convince a theist that just blocks his ears with his hands and reformulating the same arguments over and over again (wich is what most theists do),
I am not sure if the grip can be lost, weakened sure (and don't get me wrong, I think that any theist that becomes atheist is worth it) but what is it we're trying to do? Everytime a theist makes a claim, we refute it, everytime they advance something, we know better (pinecones :D), if nobody listens, why bother talking?
Re-reading myself, I guess I answered the question a bit ''any theist that becomes atheist is worth it'' but what are you guys' personnal motivations?
also fun :D

No, we'll never "convert" Pat Roberts, but what about this guy? http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/06/i_get_email_58.php

''I think that any theist that becomes atheist is worth it'', this thread was meant to discuss what other things atheists are fighting for.

Personally, to flex my brain. It's one thing to know that somebody's claim is ridiculous, but it's another entirely to try and think of a fresh new way to prove that it's ridiculous. I could care less about whether my explanations are compelling, only that they haven't been said like I'm saying them before.
