No further description necessary. I happen to like this:

Paolo Veronese. Brilliant, but at the same time, scandalous. So much so that he incurred the wrath of the Vatican simply for what he actually put in his paintings. Two examples:

Here in the "Wedding at Cana (1563)" he has the audacity to portray himself (in White) and his friend Titian (in Red) as muscians personally entertaining Christ. Although this notion may seem a bit silly now, For the times it would raise the eyebrow (and it did).

This is the "Feast in the House of Levi (1573)" which was originally supposed to depict the last supper. What actually came out was in reality as you can see, Jesus at a Venitian feast, replete with all its drunkeness and (typical) Venitian extravagance. The Church considered it "blasphemous" and so he got a knock on the door from the inquisition.

Salvador Dali

I don't know how to really describe it. It's like molding reality through a visceral kaleidoscope.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! If there are any pieces of art you like feel free to post 'em. I'm a fan of Hokusai, so I was actually thinking about getting this as a tattoo:

My ex, who I still can't get out of my head - her favorite is Hopper. For the longest time 'Automat' was my desktop

Though of Hopper's I think 'Sunlight on Brownstone' is my favorite.

Great idea for a thread! Nice way to be exposed to great artists. I'm quite ignorant of art myself, but I'll give Salvador Dali another vote, especially this painting is to my liking:

I don't know if photographers are considered artists, but these guys put so much work into their pictures I certainly call them that:

Dave Hill:

Eric William Curry, the master of "painting with light". The amount of work that goes into a single photograph of his is insane:

I think I get a similar feeling while listening to the Mars Volta and looking at a Dali piece. LOL! The 2 go really well in my book.

Ah yes, "Guernica" by Picasso. Brilliant piece.

I can't say that I have a favourite artist or piece of art but the first piece that comes to mind for me is "The Starry Night" by Van Gogh:
