I meant for my not paying attention to be my grounds/basis. And the quote isnt even a quote, I was just being cheeky ;)

Re: Which of the following applies better in your daily life

If your asking for my daily work life, then it's the scientific method. I generally work with volatile chemicals and propellant and need to be absolutely sure my experiment is controlled before I move forward.

As for my daily home life, I still find myself using the same framework for every decision I make through the day, especially when I'm out in my workshop.

I try not to rely too heavy on experience for what might happen since it's easier to make mistakes that way or miss something I have overlooked. I don't have the greatest short term memory either, so I tend to write stuff down all the time. My entire house has post its on the wall everywhere *shrug*

err... what's the distinction between "trial and error" and "experience" and "common sense"?

Trial and error is what one does when one is dealing with a new situation or experience.

Experience is what one draws upon when the (or a similar) situation has previously occurred.

Common sense is what one draws upon one one can't, or doesn't want to, actually go through the effort of trial and error and/or the scientific method.

That's just how it seems to me though...

Ah, hehe, I have to decline that one, because not paying attention gets us in trouble more than the above enumerations. :D

What framework do you use?

I agree with you. Experience has it's own limits, especially when one relies on it too much and assumes the result will be the same as the former, however, in general it's a good metric.

Note:

I'm glad that no one has chose common sense. Hehe.

Scientific Method:

1. Define the question
2. Gather information and resources (observe)
3. Form hypothesis
4. Perform experiment and collect data
5. Analyze data
6. Interpret data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis
7. Publish results
8. Retest

Perhaps if you don't think of it in the sense of creating grand experiments but applying a structurally sound solution to every problem no matter how trivial, then we might get less confirmation bias, etc in the world.

I will know use the scientific method to make a sandwich!

Wow. That's something. I'm really impressed. It's not easy to do what you do. Kudos.

In my case, I usually use Logic first, trial and error next, and lastly experience, unless it's when a certain situation requires the scientific method. I use logic to think of the best way to try. I try it and see if it'll work. If it does, I file it under experience and try it again. If it works, I apply it with the pressumption that it works.
