Whatcha reading at the moment?

I just finished the Prince Of Thorns trilogy by Mark Lawrence. I have to say this was some of the best stuff I've read in a while. Highly recommended for those who enjoy Game of Thrones etc. a few of my favorite quotes from it below.

“Memories are dangerous things. You turn them over and over, until you know every touch and corner, but still you'll find an edge to cut you.”

"I maintain a balanced view of the world, but that balance is always in my favor. I may be running out of options, but running out isn't an option....
The biggest lies we save for ourselves."

“You can only win the game when you understand that it is a game. Let a man play chess, and tell him that every pawn is his friend. Let him think both bishops holy. Let him remember happy days in the shadows of his castles. Let him love his queen. Watch him lose them all.”

“And when pain bites, men bargain. Boys too. We twist and turn, we plead and beg, we offer our tormentors what he wants so that the hurting will stop. And when there is no torturer to placate, no hooded man with hot irons and tongs, just a burn you can't escape, we bargain with God, or ourselves, depending on the size of our egos."

“A fool may scrawl on a slate and if no one has the wit to wipe it clean for a thousand years, the scrawl becomes the wisdom of ages.”

The Name of the Wind.

I finished the Mistborn trilogy some time ago and I liked it a lot. I also read The Alloy of Law which is part of Mistborn series.

I also read Clive Barker's "Weaveworld" which was recommended to me by Dean. It was ok but I wasn't blown away. I think I'm on fantasy roll.

The Name of the Wind.

Finally! :D

I read both (Name of the Wind and Wise Mans Fear) and they're without doubt the best fantasy books I've read since the Harry Potter books.

I finished the name of the wind yesterday. It's awesome.

Now I'll have a breake from reading and maybe start "The Wise Man's Fear" tonight.

This is like an addiction. A great way to procrastinate, though.

That one's even better, believe it or not.
I loved some of the quotes in NOTW though:

“Congratulations. That was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Ever.”

God's body, who measured things in leagues these days? Depending on where that fellow grew up, a league could be anywhere between two to three and a half miles. My father always claimed that a league wasn't really a unit of measurement at all, just a way for farmers to attach numbers to their rough guesses.

I've just finished the book two of Mistborn: The Well of Ascension. It was great. I'm planning to take a break before starting the book three but I don't know if I have that much willpower.

Well, I failed at taking that break. I started reading the 3rd book in the trilogy the day after the post and finished it 10 days ago. I think it's my favourite fantasy book right now. I ordered 4th book in the series, The Alloy of Law.

If you enjoy the Mistborn books check out Sanderson's Starlight Archives. So far he's finished two of the books (and they are huge). I read both of them in a two day stretch. I couldn't put them down. I haven't read anything by him that was bad. He even managed to save the Wheel Of Time when I thought it was hopeless.

I've since picked the Malazan Book of The Fallen back up and finished the fourth and fifth books. Well worth the effort I had to put into reading the first two or three. Highly recommended even though I have a handful of books to go in the series(plus those written in the Malazan world). It really was a chore to read the first two because you aren't spoon fed anything. I feel like I need to go back and read those again now that I understand who is who and what is what. I see this being a series I can read multiple times and catch new stuff.

Two days? Bloody hell!

I'm reading the second book of The Kingkiller Chronicles. It's almost 1000 pages long and it took me weeks and I still have 200 pages left. But the book is great. I highly recommend. I think I read one of The Mistborn books in less than 2 weeks and it was probably the fastest I've ever read a book but two days? Damn. GRR Martin said he read The Wise Man's Fear (Kingkiller 2nd book) in one day. o_O I'm so slow.

And it's The Stormlight Archive :) I am pondering getting it. I was also thinking about Malazan but the next thing I'll try to get will probably be The First Law. I'm not sure yet, I'll see what's available.

Oh, and another Mistborn book is coming out in October. All of sudden I don't mind GRR Marting taking his time finishing the next book.

Cheers.

I have too much free time. Since I can find electronic books for free in most instances I read a lot. I haven't counted exact numbers but I've read about 45-50 books already this year. The First Law series is good stuff. I read most of those last year. I've still got one more of the stand alone works to read though. I enjoyed the Mistborn books more but I'd say they are on that same sort of level. The Broken Empire is my favorite so far this year. It's pretty dark and gritty. It's possible that Malazan will overtake it once I get finished but I can't read those as fast. I have to be paying attention. There's too many characters, plots, etc. to keep up with to speed read. I have the Kingkiller books but for some reason haven't read them yet. I think I was waiting for the last one to come out. I prefer for series to be done before I start but I dont' always hold to that. I'm afraid Martin is going to die before he finishes his books. He's awfully slow.

Holy shit! I have finished one book this year, and at the rate I am going, I might finish three this year.

I started and finished The Black Company book Shadow Games by Glen Cook today. That series is pretty good but it's starting to get stale. I'll probably keep reading because they are easy reads. They aren't bad by any means and the first three were really good.

I plan to start the next Malazan book tomorrow. Those take me about 4-7 days depending on my ability to concentrate. I usually have two books going at once so I have something heavier I can read when I'm focused and something lite to read when I'm just killing time. Most of the books I've read this year fit the lite category. Stuff like the Black Company and the Jack Reacher series. I just have too much time on my hands and reading is one of the few inexpensive things I can do.

It always depends on what kind of book you're reading. In my best times I would read 10 books a week, but those were 250-500 pages and not particularly complicated. If you venture in the realm of GRR Martin and the like, reading a book a week is already pretty good. If you read science stuff (as I mostly do now) one a month is already pretty darn impressive.

Re-reading a bunch of the old Culture novels.

Finished Look to Windward, now i'm starting on Use of Weapons. I'm waiting on Amazon to send me the last two Banks released.

After that, think I might dig out some Larry Niven.

I'm 300 pages into Before They Are Hanged, the second book in The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. First one was a bit slow. This one I'm enjoying more.

I enjoyed those better as they went as well. Not sure the ending was my fav but it was still good. I read the first two stand alone books after those and they were worth reading as well. I plan on starting the next one when I finish up Malazan. I just started the last one in that series last night. I can't recommend it enough. If you like fantasy it's a shame if you don't read Malazan at some point.
