Sorry if this has been discussed before, I didn't go wading through all 47 pages of this topic (so apologies if this has been hashed out already)
Ok so according to the various texts on all the prophets we've been informed that Jesus Christ was jewish prior to his becoming a prophet or messiah or whatever.
We also have been informed that Joseph Smith was methodist before becoming the first prophet of the mormon faith.
But does anyone know what original faith Muhammad was?
I did a quick google and I can't find anything (not saying it's not there - just that I didn't find it)
I would be curious to discover this answer

Well I don't know. I'm guessing pagan. Polytheism was common in that region at the time as far as I know.

Hanif.

What you and I may call a non-Mosaic Jew (i.e. follower of Abraham).

Ok thanks guys, I figured it might help with some conversations that I can't avoid.
I usually don't get into arguments/discussions about religion as they are a waste of my time. I'm not a good enough debater on this subject because I don't understand the logic behind their arguments. (our family stopped doing that in my Grandfather's time and we usually just don't bring it up now)
But , on the rare occasion the zealot in question won't let it go and starts following me, occasionally it's helped to remind them that Jesus, for example was a jew. At least it stops them long enough to make a hasty retreat.
I have to say, one thing I quite like about Hindu's (we have a couple in my extended family now) never once have they tried to have a debate about religion with any of us.
They don't see a need to "spread the word" or try and convert anyone.
