What Manner of God Would You Worship?

Damn why did he/she get banned before they had a chance to respond to me? :p

That's two posts I won't get a response to now

I just bashed my face into my desk twice... felt about as good

 I wanted to know why I'm a bigot for not wanting to date a creationist though... I'm sure it would have made for amusing reading.

Really? Because I imagine I'd quickly grow tired of you people.

I cannot make sense of that responce, sorry.
Well you said that any being with that much power would inevitably become corrupt. Though I don't know how you can say this, as nihilism does not allow for 'corruption' in the sense that your statement implies. Perhaps you are of some strange new form of nihilism?

My rebuttal is that - granted godlike powers - I don't think I would deign to interact with humanity at all. How then would you judge my corruption?

I would label corruption of a deity with anything that can harm it's creations. However that is just me, being one of the creations (hypothetically of course). Anyway, signs of corruption of a deity could include things in the general area of a giant foot dropping from the clouds and crushing entire townships or perhaps a pack of 300 foot tall, living teddy bears with a craving for human flesh.
We are already capible to identify evil in our society, therefore why should our hypothetical selves be ignorent of what is evil in their situation.

Well we who do not call ourselves nihilists are thusly capable, I'm not sure how you are doing so...

Anyway, the point being that tormenting those infinitely weaker then yourself would get old fast - at least for me. I don't go around stomping on ant hills for my own amusement, and I don't really see how being granted unlimited power would make this sort of thing more appealing. So I disagree with your assessment.

The Invisible Blue Whales. They live in space, and when they open their mouths black holes form. Worship obligations require seven days of hard labor (Smoking Marijuana is also considered hard labor) a week. The Massive amounts of Gas in space are the holy flatulence that results from their enormous appetite. That is all.

???

I see the problem.
Sorry, I believe I may have not worded my post properly.

What I ment to say is that I would give the humans a kill switch for their god. Because with all that power he would eventually step on an ant (metephor for human).

Once again I am sorry for the misunderstanding.

Anyone read Jaquline Carey novels? The deities in her books are pretty cool...discounting the two that mirror Yahweh and Jesus.

Uhh, wait a minute as I find out the actual meaning of the word "worship"...

These definitions are from Wiktionary. Here I go:
  • The devotion accorded to a deity or to a sacred object: as stated elsewhere, the god would have to require this for survival. Or so that He/She/It/Ey could perform "miracles". Those acts or the existence of this god would have to be beneficial to me.
  • The religious ceremonies that express this devotion: see above.
  • (by extension) The ardent love of a person: sure, why not? I'm very loving.

Beneficial to me; requiring the worship to be a god. Those would be it for me. Now, if the god would not require worship to be a god or to retain eir magical superpowers, it would have to fall to the third category. In which case the bar is higher - while I'm very loving, there are certain standards that need to be met for me to love someone or something.

Beneficiality, not just for me but for everyone. Agreeable nature/personality and morality. Pleasant to be with.

The ideal god who would gain my adoration (and perhaps even devotion and worship) would be a divine teacher. Omniscience as such is not required. Immortality most definitely would. Capability to learn if not already omniscient would be an absolute requirement. Through my god I would gain knowledge, methods of learning and reasoning and an understanding of the world that could be applied to survive and prosper in it.

So, in short, worship would have to be earned.

No, respect is earned. Worship, is basically grovelling.
The subject of worship can persuade someone to worship it, be it by friendly means or no. Ultimately, whether someone lowers him\herself to worship is up to them.

I cannot think of any self-repecting, sound of mind human being who would lower him\herself to worship... anything really. I know that the thought wouldn't even cross my mind.

I suppose it might be worth it. To get eaten first, that is. Not to mention that your children might gain immortality (or at least agelessness, not unkillability.)

Relatively simple question:
Supposing that there is a god, and that this god is in some sense knowable, what characteristics would such a being have to possess in order that you might worship it?

Anything at all, omnipotence, humility, wisdom, compassion, whatever; excluding, of course, "the power to make me do such things as worship it."

For any deity to be worth worshiping it would have to be demonstrably wise and compassionate. Worshiping anything that honestly doesn't care about you makes no sense, which is why I'm so confused why anyone worships the god from the bible. Any god that commits genocide and mass murder at the drop of a hat does not seem very compassionate and certainly doesn't seem to care about anyone at all.

Cthulhu: I shall eat the Bus drivers first, and then the Police officers, and then the Cartoon writers, and shall continue on in that fashion...

So if this hypothetical god offered you anything you'd desire and all you'd have to do is grovel a little, you wouldn't do it? That's impressive. I'd grovel - it doesn't really cost me anything and could be classified as a service industry work for which I get paid very well.
