The whole thing seems like the classic "Greed compels us to exploit resources to an extent that poisons us."

"Being naive won't save you from the predatory realities of human nature"
The way the happy folk just hang out basking in their ignorance to the point of not even being able to see the 'strangers.' This could easily represent people's blindness to motivations in other people they don't understand.

"innocence is delicious!"
The mining of the souls of these happy folk. As the world becomes more and more desensitized there is a certain fascination with purity or innocence.. even if in the real world the concept is mostly imaginary.

Mostly though it just strikes me as a cautionary tale of, "Be nice to the environment" with a little bit of the "happy native people" fairy tale people in western societies like to tell themselves.
