We are the universe - help!

The basic idea that we all share a common consciousness with everything in the universe has been around for a long time.
I had this thought some time ago during a stage of experimentation with altered mind states: maybe before the big bang was god and then god exploded and made the universe and we are all parts of god trying to explore our self and eventually we will find unity again.

I don't think it has any merit and have found myself in an argument about it on youtube.
Here is the video in question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRqCPj-JJFI

I'm not sure I am doing a good job of presenting a rational response to the video, it just strikes me as being such obvious rubbish that I have trouble not giggling at the authors attempts to defend it. If anyone else would like to attempt a rational comment on this video maybe you can do better. And well, you know since we are all "one" you should want to help me out right?

He's just bullshitting. The first and only thing you need to say to debunk his claims is: Prove it.

Also, he says that "Before linear time (I can only assume he means spacetime) there was an entity which was all alone. When he spent too long [time] alone his personality started splitting which means that we all are the same person, because we're made of the same energy".

sounds like some sort os zeigtgeist thingie, which is bullshit.

It also sounds like were somehow chosen, or way better or grander then anything else. in one word megalomania.

It fits in the same area as any religion, its untestable, and based on some human thinking it without any prove. go ahead and believe in it, but that makes u no better then the ignorant creationists, well perhaps somewhat better in the sence that u don't ignore logic or science..
its amusing how he uses truth in his clip...

(I like the music used in the clip though ^)

I agree that everything in the universe is "one." But I wouldn't call that God, and you also have to remember that even if the galaxies and other people are "you", so is dog shit.

People talking about proofs and things being testable in the philosophy section? I find myself wondering about that bit of logic. Philosophy is about intangibles and theoretical ideas being applied to the world around us. It's a way to explore that which can not be truly tested, and to define that which will forever be unknowable.

There are no great answers - excluding "42" - only great questions and intricate explanations. I watched the video that was referenced, and many comments come to mind. I spent my time in the trenches playing with varied philosophies. I even played around with some of the cosmic consciousness ideas for a while. There is a form of logic that must be applied, which 'aARIESsSs' clearly has not done. I'd be willing to discuss this in some detail to help debate with the poster of the referenced video, however it requires stepping outside of the constraints of that which can be shown to be real, into the realm of speculative nonsense.

Then, in my opinion, it is simply not worth wasting brain power on. There is no realizable benefit. To the contrary, it is this type of speculative nonsense that leads to dogmatic belief.

As a thought experiment, this isn't a bad idea. But of course he then says that "god" has a multible personality disorder and declare it absolute truth. And of course there's an all encompassing conspiracy involving government and the major religions.

He takes his ideas a little too seriously.

Music was nice.

I personaly had a fase i which i believed in the exact same thing (except for the goverment conspiracy and the all knowing god thing, my stance was that everyone is prety much clueless doing whatever they supoused to be doing).
Anyways, from my personal point of view this is an issue more linked with the problem of self identity. the identity problem is a major brain rape because we feel that we are some what special and unique because we have this window to look at the world and it doesn't seem to be anything else. Why did I ended to be who I am and not anybody else? Why everything seams more real and seriouse then just a complex chemical reaction?

The problem is there is absolutly no way to tell conclusivelly that you really exist (the way you think you exist) or that you are just a complex interaction that acts like you taught that you did.
Of course people will try and come up with any explenation as they can, and the fact that it is tottaly made up and most probably wrong will not stand in their way.
All you can do with this situation is to have a philosofical washout that will not lead to any conclusion but can only let you admire the what if situation, Other then that it is totaly rubish.

The guy sounds like he is trying to put a new spin on Theism.

The stuff he says about us all previously being one being is completely ridiculous because he simply has no way of knowing that. Very theistic.

Anyway. I believe that the universe despite being divided is one. Aristotle even said "The whole is more than the sum of its parts" The whole being the universe. Using logic it's plain to see we are the universe. Yes we have been separated and the big bang theory does a pretty good job of explaining how long this has been happening for and what has happened ever since and it is still to this day going on.

To refute the idea we are separate from the Universe is dualistic and false. The universe if you will is our container.
However. I do not believe that this in any way shape or form means that there was originally an entity. We just don't have enough to go on, even for speculation this is reaching into the realms of fantasy.
