The remissions got a bad name in the Middle Ages because unscrupulous churchmen sold them for large sums of money. But now indulgences are being applied to the 21st century.
I thought the previous pope had gotten rid of the idea of purgatory. Granted the only reason he did that was to get rid of the idea that god was punishing infants who died before getting the chance to be baptized.
