Vanguard was launched in early 2007, and kind of flopped. I started playing later that year, giving the devs time to polish it up first. It had been launched about a year ahead of schedule, and when I joined it was pretty spot on what it should have been launched as. I've come and gone and come again on Vanguard. It is perhaps the greatest mmorpg I've ever played - it's in the style of old Everquest, and is what EQ2 should have been.
Recently they released a new starting zone and a free trial to play any race/class to 10 in that starting zone. Activating your account and continuing past, if you choose, no longer requires a software key, just beginning a subscription(standard $15/mo).
I encourage everyone who likes to explore different MMOs to come play and try it out. Hit me up in chat, steam, or skype, and I'll be happy to join you when I'm around to do so.
