I don't know BrachioPEP's circumstances and hope they are well and happy, but I just wanted to note that seeing things like this can be a real turn off for newcomers to a webforum. It gives an air of stagnation if even the moderators don't log in for 6 months.

BrachioPEP has other duties at the moment he is leading Phylogeny Explorer Project. He is not a moderator as in moderator he needs access to back-end and admin/moderator forums so to be fast i granted him moderator permissions. At the moment i have other responsibilities but i need to revamp this site but that’s time consuming like one hour a day for 2 to 3 months before its done. But i have asked him to login and join the discussion.

I think i solved this he can still see all but should not be in the admin/moderator staff.

Hi Sparhafoc et al.

I apologise for my absence from logging in (e.g. as a mod) since November 2020. I have no excuse.

I shall resume my duties in the admin/moderator roles forthwith.

Sorry, wasn't meant to be a criticism of you personally - just about the way it appears when looking at statuses. The only other forum I am a member of has the same problem - nearly all the listed moderators actually stopped being moderators long ago and haven't even posted as regular members in years. It just feels stagnant.

It was perfectly valid and reasonable, Sparhafoc. Thanks. I wonder if you'd care to join a selected member discussion on ways in which we can energise the group. It has already been suggested (by myself actually) to have video interviews with popular youtubers and/or philosophers etc. and develop a Youtube or video side. I have already agreed at least one sduch interview. Their following is significant and should attraxt more interest here.

I think it's a great idea to get input from the few regulars here.

I'm not clear why you'd want it restricted (good ideas can come from the most absurd places), but I am guessing that some of the subfora here are only viewable by members, is that right Borg?

Perhaps worthy of a separate thread?

One way around that particular issue in the future would be simply to have LoR as your homepage (or to have it as one of your default tabs in your browser tabset), so that every time you open your browser it updates the visit time.

It wouldn't address not logging in for yonks, but it would give the illusion of having done so.

There is only one restricted zone on LoR that is the admin fortress its where we have guides for the forum read moderator and/or admin stuff only. We also talk about users so we know whats going on and the deleted archive is in it. There two other items hidden Article Management System (AMS) this is a CMS system like Wordpress and ShowCase (SC) this is where you can showcase your stuff. But both needs work before it functions.

Hi Hackenslash

Reasons for restriction are more to do with democracy/reward, but either could work.

Getting feedback from active, involved people (like people who vote) seems a nice way of rewarding them and showing appreciation to those known to care rather than equality with passing members belonging to thousands of groups who may rarely visit. The site/group is open to all to post normal stuff, but added privileges are (first at least) offered to those who are committed or demonstrating interest and there more to see what is happening and want to invest time in improvements.

There are other ways to do this (reward folk), but I was suggesting having a working/discussion group comprised of invited/interested people. If interest expands for new or other members, they are then demonstrating commitment and can be considered.

A sort of tier thing. All members continue to have full access to all discussions and being able to comment without restriction. Anyone can make suggestions/put forward ideas, but the decisions will be around a selected table., so people can be asked or polled.

Doing some things on a group wide basis is time consuming, as it means leaving things for weeks to ensure everyone sees it and then dealing with the inevitable, “I didn’t see it/I was away/why didn’t you do X or Y?” Feedback should be a few days, if you are there, you get it, if not, you don’t. People can always get notifications if a group is important to them. That way, things happen quicker and are actioned by those involved/interested the most. We might miss out occasionally on a good idea, but then, where does one draw the line?

Assuming members is supposed to say moderators then yes.

No, I meant members.

For example, in the other forum I am a member of, the majority of subfora are open to the world, and presumably can therefore be raped or whatever by the bots trawling the net to produce links for search engines.

But other fora are not visible to anyone other than members.

Not suggesting this happen here as Borg has already said he's busy without worrying about this, but I assumed there was something already like this in place. My mistake! :)

It's very rare a spammer, human or bot can successfully register with the relevant permissions to post. They're almost always caught in the approval queue and can't do anything at all, they're then rejected and/or spam cleaned. I think between my self and Borg on average we purge around 20 a day.

The software Xenforo has good measures against spam it gets info from multiple sources, if the system does not trust a user because of this its in the approval queue. Like *SD* says we clean on average 20 accounts that are high in spamming. If someone gets in then we can spam clean meaning we get options for checking ip addresses used, posts, email, cookies etc etc we press one button and its gone no questions asked. Also bots are filtered by an algorithm they will not even make the approval queue. The only drawback is the cost of the software its not free its 160 dollars to buy and 85 dollars a year to renew, but worth it in my eyes. I administrated a phpBB board and that was over run by spammers that board has been migrated to IPS board is located https://phylogenyexplorerproject.org/ its more powerful then this site but both can come close of each other. But IPS can run a fully functional store and Xenforo cant do that without major add-ons.
