Is there a rule against thread necromancy?

Nope. Some consider it bad form. I only care if one person does it multiple times at a go, then it borders on trolling.

I only asked because there seems to have been a spate of it recently (I'm not the only one who's mentioned it), and I wondered if there was some underlying cause.

I was a massive thread necromancer when I first arrived (as in necro-ing lots of threads, not super super old ones). I basically went through all the forums and picked out all the interesting topics in each forum. The problem is our forum doesn't have lots of topics, so even if you pick only threads from the first page or two you can end up writing in really old threads... So that may be one explanation.
