But is a world government desirable?
Many posts later, I am still no closer to understanding quite what it is supposed to offer.
I can think of plenty of scenarios where a world government could result in totalitarian hell - I don't think it's a panacea to our problems. I think they cannot be addressed with single catch-all solutions but need to be dealt with individually on their own grounds in detail.
Other aspects are complex. Nukes are terrifying. Nukes are utterly stupid. However, nukes have also ushered in a nuclear peace which has lasted 3 generations already. Perhaps humans are still so infantile we need that looming sword of Damocles to keep us from rending each other.
