Uganda's "Kill the Gays Bill"

This is a humanitarian crisis right here. Uganda plans on passing a law that punishes all homosexuals with life in prison, or worse, death. But it dosen't stop there. People who don't report homosexuals within 24 hours are fined or imprisoned. And from what I hear from NPR, those who speak out against this reprehensible law is considered homosexual themselves and are subject to the same punishments.

Among the people backing up this bill are a Christian evangelical organization, The Family.

Here is a .pdf of this disgusting bill: http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/btb/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Bill-No-18-Anti-Homosexuality-Bill-2009.pdf

Why homosexuality has become such an explosive issue in Uganda has to do, in part, with the complex set of social issues wrapped up in it. These include the erosion of the nuclear family, the influx of global culture, and an epidemic of a HIV/AIDS, whose treatment forces individuals and families to break every social taboo. Most importantly, Ugandans are extremely religious, with more than 94 percent saying religion was important in their lives in a 2008 survey by Afrobarometer. And from the country's varied branches of Christianity to its sizable Muslim community, no one preaches tolerance of gay rights.

this is beyond sad, its just... horrifying. even rick warren finally came out against it. furthermore...
One of the churchmen leading the anti-gay crusade in Uganda is Pastor Martin Ssempa, a man Warren has welcomed as a speaker at Saddleback. As part of his shtick, Ssempa likes to burn condoms and organize anti-homosexual parades to rile up the masses.

this anticondom attitude in a country torn apart by HIV/AIDS is... just as bad. execute the people you wouldn't allow to use condoms to protect themselves from getting the infection you don't want them to have. awesome.

you think if the world whines about it loudly enough they will stop it though? :/

insanity strikes again :(

If they pass it, Uganda will face harsh international censure. Among other things, Sweden will cease its $50,000,000 development aid to Uganda if this evil law passes, to teach 'em a lesson about human rights. But they hardly care actually.

First everyone complained about colonialism tampering with indegenous cultures, then when the colonial powers leave everyone complains about the natives reverting to their own savage ways! Sheesh!

pfffffft. culture is not an all or nothing prospect. those cultural practices which don't violate human rights are ok with me

At least we agree that advanced people like us should be dictating what these people can and can't be.

I agree, when we disapprove of who and what they are we should coerce them into changing.
