This is why I own a gun...

Hey Joe weren't you saying a while ago that you'd keep your gun in a lock box? I'm guessing you changed your mind. It seems even before you heard this story...

When I leave the house for an extended period, it gets locked onto a pipe. I don't feel like I need to carry at the local grocery store.

When I have money, I'll get one of those cool lock boxes. Don't have much money right now.

What are criminals supposed to steal from you if you don't have any money?

Would you like a shopping list?

Listen... it is rough here, and I'm apparently fairly wealthy for this neighborhood. The little kid next door came over to our back porch the other day, looks in the back yard and says in a voice of wonder and awe: "You guys have TWO cars?!?!" We're probably the only people on this block with so few people taking up so many square feet of home. The amount of stuff I have that's pawn-able probably could net as much as some people make in 6-7 months of work. Hell, either one of my watches is worth as much as some of the cars on my street, and neither watch is really that fancy.

But if you're a drug addict, you probably figure my $650 watch can get you $100-150 worth of drugs. That's a pretty solid baggie of crack if that's your high of choice. I'm sure they'd prefer cash but they'll take what they can get.

I suggest you move instead of getting a gun. It's better to avoid a fight than to kill someone.

I suggest you stop and put a little more thought into the things you post before you hit the "submit" button. ;)

I just moved here. I'm in a one-year lease. I put down a $1500 deposit. It cost $5000 to move all of the furniture and such to this house, and then close to $1500 for the utilities and such to get hooked up. I've mentioned that I don't have any money. My wife's job paid for most of the move, and we had to get into a house quickly or pass on the job and maybe wind up without a home at all.

How the fuck am I supposed to just move? Seriously, where am I supposed to come up with the money to put down another security deposit, moving costs, and all the rest? I know a bunch of you folks who post here are in your teens and early 20s, so I'm trying not to lose my cool and start screaming or anything... but come on! Again, I'm talking about what I have to do to adapt to a situation that I can't change... because it is a situation I can't change!

Believe me, I was happy as a clam living in a neighborhood where if I accidentally left my wallet in my car and the car unlocked, absolutely nothing would happen. If I could wave a magic wand and own a million dollar home in a gated community, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Do you think I like having to feel like my life is in danger? Do you think I'm thrilled with the thought that my wife can't walk around the neighborhood without weird drunks and druggies yelling random weird shit at her, or trying to offer her drugs? If there had been a viable option besides this, I'd have grabbed it with both hands.

Yeah, it is better to avoid a fight than to kill someone. But if you can't avoid the fight, it is better to win than to lose.

Well I didn't know that!

I know you don't have any money but I hope for you that will change over time, it will take a while to save all that money ofcourse and I don't know how bad the neighbourhood is but if it's so unsafe you can't walk outside alone I would suggest doing it when you're financially capable to move.

True, just make sure you're not being sued by a robber who got permanent damage.

You can't sue if you're dead. I don't expect someone I shoot at to survive the experience.

I don't plan on living here forever, but while I'm here I plan on keeping my home and family as safe as I can.

Family can sue. And they'll try way harder to get you screwed for shooting someone in their kin.

It's irritating to see you act like we don't try to defend ourselves. So I decide to not carry a gun, so what? That's just how I choose to defend myself and it's been pretty effective so far. I don't live in the best area either, so I'm not just talking out of my ass. A bit of common sense goes a long way. If I'm in a situation where that's not enough, I'm ready to take things a step further, but without a gun.

Better sued than dead?

Carrying a gun isn't the only way to protect yourself, but pretending that giving criminals all your money is a valid method of self-defense is fucking nonsense. Check the thread, that's what has been said. I'm not interested in getting into a fight... I'm not playing at being a tough guy, I'm worried about my life and my wife's safety.
