This is why I own a gun...

I found a note in my mailbox today, and this is what it said:

ROBBERY ALERT

The victim stated that he was sitting on his back porch when a black male wearing black jeans, black hoodie, a black skull cap and a black cover over the bottom of his face, came to his back stairs. The suspect walked onto the back porch and the victim stated "who is that?" The suspect never said a word but pulled out a black handgun from his waistband and pointed it in his face. The victim stated that he threw his hands up and told the male not to shoot him. The suspect made no statements but went into his right pants pocket and took his state ID and $150 in cash.

Yeah. On my street two days ago. Back stairs means the guy cut through the alley where we walk our dog. This is why I carry a gun, and why my wife is learning to shoot so SHE can carry a gun as well.

Crikey! D:

Though I don't see how you bringing out a gun in that situation would do anything but increase your chances of getting shot..

So do you carry your gun at all times? Would you reach for it with a gun already in your face? Do you think that it would have been safer for the guy to pull a gun in return than just give over his money?

Life > money. Someone pulled a gun on me then they're welcome to what meager change is in my pocket, they could have my shoes too for all I care. I'd rather that than take a bullet. Or a knife. Or a punch.

I own several guns and do not see how one would have helped in a situation like that, besides making your chances of becoming injured go up. In a home invasion, a gun might come in handy, just like any weapon. However, once a gun is in your face, you are at the mercy of the person holding it.

arg-fallbackName="ImprobableJoe"/>
My gun is within arm's reach at all times. I wear it openly on my hip when I walk my dog. The goal/hope is to never have to use it, and at worst that its visibility acts as a deterrent. Someone sees the gun on my hip, maybe they keep walking and find some other person to bother.

That is why I don't own a gun.

If I did and was in that situation I'd be more likely to lose my life rather than 150 dollars. I am not very likely to get in that situation because if that guy lived here he'd probably not have a gun either. He'd require all kinds of permits, or get busted pretty quickly.

I am glad it is not easy to get a gun here.

It must be nice. I live in Virginia, where anyone who doesn't have a violent criminal history can get almost any sort of weapon with nothing more than ID and $25 for the background check. Or you can go to a gun show and get almost anything for the cash and skip the ID and background check. In a perfect world, I could feel safe on my porch or in my back yard.

Why is black emphasized so much in that robbery alert??

So that people can identify them more easily and so avoid them or react faster if they see him. The person was black, and they were male. That already narrows it down to perhaps less than a fifth of the population. If they are then also wearing black jeans, a black hoodie and a black skullcap, that narrows it down further. Not many people wear such clothes, even if we neglect to mention the cover over his face.

If you're implying there's some kind of racism going on (against clothing choice?), I strongly doubt it.

Maybe it was one of the Nazgul?

It crossed my mind, but only after the handgun was described as black. Before that the alert seemed legit. Then again I may have just read to much into it.

to me, this story sounds a bit too suspicious.

first of all, im missing the time of day, with it done in day light, the afternoon, late in the evening, in the morning...
also (as pointed out) there is way too much emphasis on the color black.
to me, it sounds more like it was planned then incidental, does anyone have the numbers on the amount commited by goths?
too little info is presented to even know where this actually took place and if this place even exists.
thats just bad logic to decide to carry a gun.
if there is anything real about it, its most likely is that the guy lost the $150 and lies to the police (and his wife most likely) to cover it up.

also, if such a situation arises pulling out your own gun would only escelate the situation. better to find keypoints to make it easier to identify the culprit. Another thing that helps, don''t make it so fucking easy to get rob...
my best way of not getting robbed:
1 - don''t wonder off on your own and stay in/near crowds
2 - look fucking evil (a natural talent i apparently have)
3 - don''t look rich or easy to rob

if you truely want your gun close to you, modify your hand that the gun is build-in.

Not really...

ImJ said he carries his sidearm visibly on his hip. I doubt a would be robber would target him if that is true. Secondly, in this particular situation, if the person on his porch had a weapon and a reasonably decent IQ, I doubt he would have let the robber get near the steps of the porch in the first place. I know I wouldn't.

Well... in this neighborhood, "black male" is about 40-45% of the population. So not really that useful. Dressed in black from head to toe is a little unusual.

Sorry, you have most of the information I have...
too little info is presented to even know where this actually took place and if this place even exists.
... except the address, which is a couple of houses down from me. I thought posting my address +/- a few houses wasn't the best idea ever. I saw the cop passing out the fliers, and I don't know the guy who got robbed but the lady next door was talking to my wife about it last night and she knows the guy.
thats just bad logic to decide to carry a gun.
Care to reconsider?

I doubt it, but who can say?

#3 is why I don't bother carrying concealed. I'd rather open-carry and be "that crazy gun nut" than carry concealed or not at all and be "that rich* guy who looks like an easy target." I'm not sure how I'm supposed to attract a crowd to walk my dog, and looking evil is beyond my abilities.

Holsters are easier, and you're at least slightly less likely to accidentally shoot someone when pointing at things in the store.

I look like a homeless person most of the time. Never been robbed. Besides, good luck getting a gun here in Belgium, ofcourse if you have connections to the underworld you can get heavy weapons easely like last week happend in Liege. A guy started throwing grenades around and started shooting at random people. A gun won't help if the guy is carrying a machine gun.

You know, it is interesting...

The gun culture is so strong in America that you guys sound like a bunch of puling crybaby victims to me, who almost deserve to get mugged, shot, and possibly hung by your ankles over a pit of sharks with frikkin' laser beams on their heads. That can't be right, can it?

Colours indicate intentional murder rate per 100,000 population:

It reflects well on Europe. I would suggest that allowing citizens to own guns contributes enormously to the US having such a high murder rate. Considering how rich a country it is, it should be comparable to Europe; not India or China.
