Type 1 diabetes is associated with deficiency (or lack) of insulin. It is not known why, but the pancreatic islet cells (Beta-cells) quit producing insulin in the quantities needed to maintain a normal blood glucose level. Modren medicine has found a method to reduce the effects of this disorder. The pateint must be treated with insulin. This involves injecting insulin under the skin -- in the fat -- for it to get absorbed into the blood stream where it can then access all the cells of the body that require it.
In the Town of Weston, Wisconsin 11-year-old Madeline Kara Neumann died of diabetic ketoacidosis, a treatable though serious condition of type 1 diabetes in which acid builds up in the blood. Diabetes is a serious and uncurable disorder(Hopefully stem cell research will change that soon). Fatal outcomes from diabetes are unusual these days, so what went wrong? Why did she die?
Madeline was refused medical attention by her perants. Why? When asked in court Mr Neumann replied "If I go to the doctor, I am putting the doctor before God,". "I am not believing what he said he would do." Madeline was refused medical attention becuase of the religous and dogmatic beleifs of "her parents" and as a result she died a slow death. The process of her death started with the minor symptoms "warning signs" fatigue, decreased consciousness, difficulty breathing, fruity breath, mental stupor, confusion, nausea, and vomiting. Thess symptoms can last anything from 24hours to several days(in madelines case) gradually progressing to the more serious sympotoms of coma and death. Madeline died on the floor of her home while her perants and relatives surrounded her praying for her recovery. Medical care was not seeked until she stopped breathing. Her parents did not seek medical attention when Madeline reached a stage where she can NOT walk, eat or talk. Both her parents were found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide. Fox news reported on this story with the title "Dad Who Prayed for Sick Girl Found Guilty in Her Death"[1]. At what point do religious beliefs take over for medical help? Where do we draw the lines? A Jehovah's Witness can refuse life-saving blood transfusion based on their religious belief. Their right of "freedom of religion" gives them that decision. but does that right extend to their children's health? I think not. A child must not suffer due to the religous dogma of the parents. Its bad enough we are unable to rescue children from religous indoctrination.
Madeline's parents got what they deserved in my opinion. Mt thoughts are with her three siblings aged 13,14 and 17 who have not only lost their sister but their parents too. fundamentalism must be stopped.
