i disagree with that statement.
you must always listen to the other person, no matter how flawed the argument is.
what i would advice is not always jump into the debate right away, think about what you want to say, how your going to say it... and then say it.
for example; with a creationist you'll be bound to get flawed arguments about evolution.
instead of explaining what is wrong about their statements, you can also say;
"say... why don't we go to a bookstore and get you a textbook for you to read and then after your done reading, well get back at your point.. oh, and i will test you to see if you really read the book!"

At which point you'll get the response "I'm not going to read some Satanic pro-Evolution book! I have the Bible and that's enough for me!"
