The Protomen and the Megas

Anyone heard these bands?

Both are...fucking awesome.

The Megas have an album out where they play and put lyrics to the music from Mega Man 2. They kind of put some story to it, in the form of humanizing the Robot Masters. One of my favorites from them is Quick Man, which frames the showdown between Mega Man and Quick Man as a western style duel, where Quick Man is nervous but intrigued by his worthy opponent. The Quick and the Blue. "They say death wears blue" and "Your speed means nothing if it's death that you're running from."

The Protomen are different and equally cool. The actual sound of their music is only marginally influenced by the games - where it is is mostly Protoman's whistle. They've got two albums out, the first tells the story of Dr. Light's rebellion against Dr. Wily in a dystopic Monsteropolis, where he builds Protoman to lead the rebellion. At the climax of the fight, when Protoman calls on humanity to overthrow their robot overlords, the humans stand by and allow Protoman to be killed. Years later Light builds Mega Man, and tells him the story of Protoman to dissuade him from rebelling as well. Of course, this just fuels Mega Man into fighting, and discovering that Protoman is still alive and defending Wily - but we all knew that.

The second album, Act II: The Father of Death, is actually a precursor to the first album. It tells the story of Dr. Light teaming with Dr. Wily to build an army of robots to serve humanity. Wily is spurned by Light's lover and so orders the robots to kill her, framing Light for the murder, who is exiled for it. Years later a man named Joe rebels and is found by Light. Light helps and outfits Joe and together they conspire against Wily. Joe inadvertently becomes a suicide bomber when the bomb he sets detonates early. Wily unleashes his army of military grade robots and declares martial law. As Light drifts towards suicide, a letter from his love inspires him to act and he begins work on Protoman.

An example from the Protomen

Both are awesome imo, and certainly add to Mega Man's legacy as the most milked video game franchise.
