The Bible is NOT. PRO. LIFE.

Here are some helpful verses in the Bible which are helpful in combating fundamentalist Christian pro lifers. Some of you may be pro-life through secular reasoning, and this is actually especially useful for those who are. This isn't an attack on the merits of pro-life in general, just a derivation of pro-life based on Biblical standards. This list can be found in a little less detail at skepticsannotatedbible, and the verses have been double checked for context correctness and consistency.

NOTE: If I don't put the exact verse, then all verses can be found online at www.biblegateway.com

Exodus 21:22-23 - If two men fight and cause a miscarriage, then the one who hurt her has to pay a small fine to the husband. If the woman is killed, then you have to give "life for life". The fetus is not considered a life to God.

Leviticus 27:6- "And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver." - Fetuses less than a month old are worth nothing. This verse occurs in a series of verses placing monetary (and not very much, about 50 silver shekels at most) on certain human lives (disgusting in itself), and of course men are 50-60% more expensive than woman.

Numbers 3:15-16- Reaffirms the Leviticus 27:6 law that states that fetuses below the age of one months are worth nothing.

Numbers 31:15-17 - Indirectly advocates the killing of fetuses

Hosea 9:14- Directly advocates the miscarriage of fetuses

Hosea 9:16- Same as Hosea 9:14

Hosea 13:16- Advocates the killing of fetuses

2 Samuel 12:14- God kills newborn babies to punish parents

Numbers 5:21-28 - God causes abortions to curse unfaithful wives

Genesis 38:24- Proposes burning pregnant woman to death if the woman is a whore.

Tell me something I don't know.

Indeed.

I especially like when believers ask where one gets one's morality if not from god.
Anywhere else is a better source of morality, clearly.

If you want to see something really good check out ProfMTH on Youtube. He's the most knowledgeable and entertaining bible debunker I have ever seen.

Unfortunately pro-life is a misnomer, these people aren't pro-life they're anti-women.

Won't work, principally because most things in the bible are a matter of interpretation.
Exodus 21:22-23 - If two men fight and cause a miscarriage, then the one who hurt her has to pay a small fine to the husband. If the woman is killed, then you have to give "life for life". The fetus is not considered a life to God.

Case in point. The KJV (the fundies favourite) says "If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life [...]"

Note that it does not say the child is worth nothing. It says that if no "mischief" follows the attacker is to be punished and fined, but if "mischief" follows then he is subject to 'like for like' reprisals, even upto death. Where does it say that mischief (i.e. harm) is to be assessed on the woman but not the child? A pro-lifer could interpret that verse to mean if you cause a miscarriage but the child lives, you'll face the weaker punishment, if the child is injured or dies, you face the stronger one.

Trading bible quotes with a fundementalist is like trading map references with a flat-earther.

Nice, George Carlin =]

"Why is it that most of the people who are against abortion are people you wouldn't want to fuck in the first place?" - George Carlin

That man was just brilliant. If there is a god, I hope Carlin went to hell... because I'd rather spend eternity in hell with him than in heaven with any christian.

Some of these verses are either taken out of context or just not entirely relevant. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the bible. But I don't think any of these were meant to apply to people of our times. And in any case, God seems to be above his own law apparently once it applies to his 'providence'.

In the turns of the New Testament, it would seem that the bible shuns away at murder in general (not to say that they are in any way the same thing!).

So it is difficult to really pull an "anti-pro-life" stance in the bible that actually applies to whenever God decided to demand some civility.

Do these verses show hypocrisy? Yes. But they won't really turn off any christian willing to argue against abortion.
