Surely this is beyond modern technology...

Your quote mining is so obvious... you deliberately cut out my quote from the page, which illustrates my point. Duh? I corrected you because I found it funny you refer to it as pre-alpha and the site is vociferous in denying that.

Woah woah woah. I did not intentionally quote-mine you. I tend not to stoop to that level and TBH it wasn't a point I was too fussed about winning.
I merely sort to cut the length of my post by removing the stuff that I thought was not addressed at me. I thought the quote from "site" was you starting a new point aimed at someone else, so I didn't read it and only addressed the part of your post that I thought was addressing me. Since you brought this back up, I am happy to acknowledge that it was relevant-although as MRaverz pointed out, I did say pre-alpha and not alpha and so was correct in what I said.

Hey everyone i just saw this and would like to point out Spore that also has a huge number of planets. Maybe not as detailed as in the game here but i'm more then postive they have the technology to do this. But will they have the server strength to do it.

I'm pretty sure they have taken all we have discussed here into consideration.

I can safely say, that if I ever win the lottery, I will buy this game and hole myself up for a good year. Then buy a lion.

I don't know if it's just my definition you have an issue with...

I find it funny that you accuse him of quote mining, which really is not what he did, when you completely quote mined both the OP AND the website the site and mistakenly say they vociferously deny it.
The Infinity Combat Prototype (latest version: 2.2.a) is a standalone game that has been released and improved upon the past months, as a way to test many components of Infinity before it is finished.
This is a completely separate program that only shares the engine. It does not represent what you will find in Infinity. Its goal is, namely, to test: the graphics engine, the physics engine, the networking engine, experiment with controls / combat mechanics / balance, to improve stability/fix bugs and measure/stress performance.
So: this combat prototype is a way to test components of infinity. Sounds like a 'pre-alpha combat test thing' to me, which is EXACTLY what he said that you took such exception to. Your comment was completely unhelpful, as well as your incredibly rude and uninspired rhetorical question 'how is modern technology beyond modern technology?' just an unbelievably silly question that does not at all address what the OP was talking about. Not sure why you're feeling so contrarian, but there was no need for it.

wow, this game looks incredible, ha i'm actually lost for words about the visuals, i hope the gameplay is good, it would be a shame for a game of this magnitude to be let down by clunky movement etc

I'm pessimistic as to Microsofts ability not to fuck everything up. That said I'm (trying) downloading the demo(?) thingy from the other thread, see how that goes.

Pre-Alpha Combat simulator. ;D

Apparently the entire game is being made by one guy plus various volunteers via the internet making models, skins etc so we can't reasonably expect a release any time soon. Certainly not this year, probably not in 2011 either :(

I suspect they will be using some sort of cloud computing for this and iterative (possibly organic algorithm) generation for the planets etc. It's certainly not beyond current technology, but it will require quite a lot of processing power when up and running (though that will also depend on the number of players and how far around the universe they are... a system with nobody in it would require a lot less processing than that is inhabited). The planet generation will most likely be a one off process, or may only get generated the first time someone was to visit that system.

After a brief skim (I'm lazy), I can't see anywhere where they say they will be making these planets etc on an individual basis. I have almost no doubt that they will be generated in some fashion. The technology for terrain generation has been around for many years now...

EDIT: Here we go... Procedural Galaxy generation: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=106&Itemid=27

It's nice to see some interest in this game from yooz peoples, as I've been following the development for a few years.

A quote from the FAQ:
"Expect a galaxy with up to hundreds of billions of worlds. You will not be able to visit them all in your whole lifetime, even if you were to spend only one second per world! "

More about the technology in the FAQ: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_easyfaq&task=cat&catid=15&Itemid=28
