In this case, I think we can chalk it up to wishful thinking and lack of research into the source of the pictures. Stupidity does sound like an apt word for it.

I would say a combination of both. Their desperate desire to see their faith validated has led them to surrender their mental faculties, and the skepticism that constitutes a major part of basic intelligence. It takes less than a minutes worth of research to find out that those pictures are hoaxes, but that's a minute they are unwilling to devote, because the hoax fits their twisted version of reality. They then become dishonest when the evidence is presented to them of the hoax and they laugh it off, continuing to propagate a myth they know to be untrue because the hoax makes them feel good.
