I might have seen it...was it on Nation Geographic, during the recent Space Week thing?

The only Hawking thing I've seen recently on Channel 4 was his biography. It did dip somewhat into his physics and thoughts on stuff but I can't remember if he mentioned anything about aliens.

Thanks, I've been looking for it.

If this is the series I think it is with his much publicicised opinions of aliens coming here to enslave and kill us then I'm going to have to disagree with him.

i agree with you but he is right about the fact that humanity is sendind out big messages to the sky's saying
HELLO WE ARE HERE!
due to all the noise we create!

I like the fact we're doing such a thing, I'm all for a giant neon sign above the Earth that says "Life lives here". The risk of aggressive aliens turning up to kill us is too small to fear, in my opinion.

i agree
i rekon if the aliens are advanced enough to come here then they must have some sort of compassion!
The benifts we could get out of it for me outweigh the risks.

Saying they "must" have some sort of compassion goes too far. After all, our sample set of space-exploring civilisations is exactly 1: ourselves. That means we don't have anywhere near enough data to start making claims about what traits space-faring organisms "must" have.

Further, we don't exactly have a good track record of encounters with intelligent beings who are even slightly different from us. I am thinking here of how our civilisation behaved when we encountered Africans. And Polynesians. And Aborigines. And native Americans. And Mayans. You get the idea. Those encounters were with members of the same species.

If we ever met up with extraterrestrials who had the exact same kind of compassion as we do, I would be genuinely afraid of them.

I actually agree with this sentence. Hanging out a sign could get us obliterated or enslaved, but it's worth a shot. And anyway, if the galaxy is full of advanced alien doom fleets, there's no reason to think that if we stopped broadcasting radio signals they would be unable to detect us.

True but we have learned from our mistakes and hope not to make them again.
The other advance civilizations in our galaxy if they exist in our galaxy probably already know about us, considering the amount of noise we make but i rekon that we first need to get to Europa so that scientists can hopefully prove that live can and has envolved on other planets.

I've always found the alien-invasion scenario to be ridiculous. In order for them to even get here means they have technology far more advanced than we do. Which means they also have vastly superior intelligence, meaning they probably aren't trying to do this destructive conquer-the-primitive-Earths-campaign.

If a civilization has progressed to such an advanced stage, yet when they get here they act like trigger-happy morons trying to kill another potential advanced civilization...I would wonder how they managed to survive themselves, and advance so much without developing more benevolent behavior.
