Anyone up and playing yet? I just walked in the door with it, and I should have it installed in a few minutes I guess.

Also, I got three "guest passes" for 7 hours of demo or 14 days, whichever comes first. If anyone wants to try it for free, email me and I'll send you the code.

I've always been a big fan of Starcraft. What's your assessment with respect to the game? Is it okay if you give a rundown of what's new?

Single player is much much better. There's a bunch of new units. there's better support for things like heroes. Joining custom maps is wildly different, which I actually dislike in its current form, though I imagine blizzard will improve it (they better, I bought the game for custom play more than anything else).

Anyone happen to know if ALL friends can see your real ID? Because this real ID shit pisses me off.

My understanding based on the FAQ is that you can add friends with or without the Real ID BS.

I bought it over the weekend. Really enjoying it so far, I haven't played it online yet.

I already had Real ID friends on my Battle.net account from playing WoW so haven't had to add anyone else yet, but as said, apparently you can add them without them seeing your Real ID (which is good, cos there's no way I'm telling you people my real name :p)

Though, I'm not the most competitive of people, I actually prefer playing Co-op against the AI with friends... yeah... lame I know.

I think I need more RAM though, 2 GB doesn't seem to be enough for it to load in any timely fashion. My graphics card probably needs upgrading too... shame I can't justify the cost :(

Yeh, I tend to play custom maps more than anything, but I also tend to play competitive the least; partially just because I tend to be bad at RTS. I mean, I got through the normal campaign without a hitch (only one mission where I almost loss, but I didn't), but there's a big difference between that and online play.

Is the hype justified, then? I haven't been at all inclined to buy it because from gameplay videos and the like it looks just like some tactic-less, speed-is-everything rts game. I prefer games like the total war series or Company of Heroes where tactics actually mean something, and flanking can make the difference between a stunning victory and utter defeat.
Am I wrong to assume this?

Not really, there are tactics involved, but mostly it involves choosing the right units for the job. Actually flanking tactics etc don't necessarily make much difference in the single player. Multiplayer is another matter as you can't always be sure what the other person will do :) I like it because of the story and I enjoy the gameplay as it is... not too complicated :p I'm not a war strategist, I just wanna blow shit up.

I'm so thrilled to see that the people here who have actually bought the game are not hard-core RTS player.

I like it, because it feels more or less like StarCraft 1, with cool cut-scenes. What the hell are these "tactics" things? Is it a kind of tank?

Maybe it's just me who enjoys what you might call RTT games over RTS then. :)
There are some games out there with a good balance between the two. Supreme Commander, for example, has you recruiting units and mass-producing the right ones for the job, but things like bombardment and flanking still make a tangible difference. And Company of Heroes is good in that respect, too, even if Multiplayer doesn't work for me...

Guess why I haven't posted in like two weeks. Hahahaha..

rushed through singleplayer within like 10 hours or so, got the "solid gold" achievement after 3 days of playing... Now just playing lots of team matches. About 350 games in total, leagues G/P/P/P. ^^
Not that that meant anything. If anyone here wants to play, PM me. ;P

Oh and I got some of these guest passes, too. If you're in the EU region, there's 2 guest passes for SC2 (you can complete singleplayer with these as you only have to log in to B.net once, no matter with what kinda key) and one for WoW. Since I think WoW is crap... whoever wants that one can have it, too. ^^

You can't. What you can do is add friends with your character name and character code, and these friends don't get access to your real name. Moreover, you have to add your real full name (I'm fairly certain) because of billing information... Also I mean, as long as you have real life friends, you'll probably want access to the realID features with them, and it'd be a bit weird for them to have to figure out that "Bob Barker" means you every time they see it.

People only become Real-ID friends if they add each other by entering each other's email addresses.

It's awesome! The multiplayer is really awesome and balanced and kept everything true to brood wars (which you know, was the best multiplayer game... ever?). But this time the campaign is actually like a campaign, unlike starcraft where it was like playing custom games vs. AI only with units with special names! This time the campaign has much more units to pick from, and you have to choose and buy upgrades, but you won't be able to pick the all etc. between maps. So you have to choose what you think sounds the best for your still of play. And then when you re-play the campaign, you can try different choices. You also have a great, great story. It's just as good as the story from the original Starcraft, only this time the cut-scenes are much better and the story is probably much easier to follow for new players to the universe of Starcraft.

Does anyone follow the pro scene?

Yes. I am a huge, huge fanboy of Bisu. Sadly he isn't doing that awesome lately =( Jaedong is another favorite. So I especially enjoyed the rivalry that existed between them in both the MSL and OSL leagues about a year (or two?) back, sadly it's died out now as neither of the two players have been anywhere near their peak lately.

Did you watch the latest pro-league finals? It was awesome =) If you haven't I won't spoil the result.

Where do you watch these? I've been watching HDStarCraft, and HuskyStarcraft, and Achaia's sc2battlegrounds VOD commentaries...

I did watch them. It's sad to see the old greats not doing so well...

I'm a JulyZerg fan and stayed up until 4:30 AM to watch a live broadcast of the Ever OSL 2008 finals where he won his Golden Mouse. I even listened to live English commentary of the game as it was being played! Those were the days...
