Star Trek thread

I've decided to start a general Star Trek discussion thread becuase I love Star Trek and it is one of my favorite things to discuss. Also Star Trek is extremely great and important and if you disagree I officially hate you! Discuss all matters relavent to Star Trek. What is your favorite series/captain/character/aliens/etc? Which Trek girls do you think are cute? Thoughts on the upcoming movie, etc.

I was watching "Chain of Command" earlier and I've come to the conclusion that if anyone other than Patrick Stewart had tried to pull off that ever so classic, memorable, and quoteable line of his it would have come off as ultra cheesy, but when he did it it was awesome! "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!" Just goes to show, Patrick Stewart sure is one of a kind when it comes to acting.

Speaking of Picard, anyone else find it strange that despite supposedly being French, he has no French accent? If anything he has a bit of a Brittish accent! The funny thing is that his brother who LIVES IN FRANCE has even less of French accent than his brother who spends all his time surrounded by guys with pleasent North American intonations! His nephew sounds like he walked off the set of a Dickens adaption, with his "mums" and "allos", and his father, who supposedly lived in France his entire life doesn't have any kind of European accent at all. What's up with that??

I have a theory about all this. What I think happened is that the French people were exterminated in the Eugenics Wars and afterwards France was repopulated by islanders who fake their frenchiness. Seems about as likely as any other theory I've heard.

Neh - firstly, HOW DARE YOU? GIRLS LIKE ST TOO!

Ahem.

And I liked looking at Dr. Bashir, if you must know. Nom.

My favorite Star Trek series is a tie between ST:TNG and ST:DS9. Picard has to be my favorite captain though, Sisko got a bit too full of himself and ended up getting on my nerves.

(As for Janeway - omg did that woman need a haircut in the early seasons, AND she was annoying as all hell.)

I've not seen enough of the Original series to make much of an opinion and I avoided Enterprise after seeing some of the first season.

And anyway, you do know Stewart is actually English, right? >> Hence the accent >> (At least he doesn't try and fail to pull off other accents, like Sean Connery - omg is he crap at accents.)

Anyway, anyway, Q had to be one of the best things about TNG and Wesley the worst.

In DS9, Odo's particular take on Mass Conservation always got on my nerves - as did his lack of ability to form decent facial features, but amazing ability to look like anything else at all.

But Dr.Bashir and Garak ALWAYS made DS9 worth watching XD

And omg, I think I'm a geek...

Ah yes, Star Trek TNG, a nice series, haven't seen too much of DS 9 and Voyager and the original series is already a long ways off for me.

What I especially liked about the series was actually Picard, he displayed how well people can be made to function as a group working for their mutual benefit and from the captains that are known in the TNG series he is the best. Other likeable characters were Data, Q and Guinan, especially the rivalry between Q and Guinan were interesting to watch and it seems that Guinan does have a few powers, that are not revealed in the series, to keep Q from doing something to her. Oh, and I think I used to have a little crush on nurse Ogawa, even though she was only a sidekick to Beverly.

Naturally there are a few favorite parts of the series, too. Some of the more memorable were the ones with Q in them, then there was 'Who watches the watchers', Relics was nice too, Disaster (I think it was called that) and a few others which I don't remember the names.

Yet, being who I am, I was also astounded by some of the technological stuff. The transporters are a nice thing to have, though the explanations given with quantum and molecular resolution for replication were a bit odd, but they somehow had to limit the possibilties of these replication systems (a transporter is only a glorified replicator).

What struck me very odd, was their behavior in many combat situation. They get fired upon again and again and seem to wait until their shields are almost down until they start with retaliation fire. As soon as the first shot flies, shouldn't you take evasive action and return fire? In this case I also wondered about the shields themselves. They sometimes use warppower to reinforce them, and that power comes from the warp core which gives out a steady amount of energy, yet they always have shields go down and down until they are gone, even though the warp core, which is the main reactor, should still feed power into the shield grid. Why then do the shields behave like they are powered only by a energizer battery? I know, for drama purposes, but it does not make sense. Well, then again, I might be spoiled by a weekly paperback SF-series here in Germany, which is called Perry Rhodan (and has been running for nearly 50 years already), were the shields on the ships need to be overloaded by a powerful enough hit if you want to damage the ship which they are protecting. This actually makes more sense to me, as the shields should be powered by the reactor which is putting out a defined amount of energy at all times and should therefore be able to feed a fixed amount of power into the shields at all times.

Of course I know that Stewart is Brittish.

Now, as for the combat, don't even get me started. I swear they intentionally do things the hard way. You know the computer on the Enterprise D is supposed to be sentient, but I think it is suicidal as well, because it never makes any effort to help the crew or avert destruction. The crew has to manually input commands for every phaser shot, every evasive maneuvre, to get the sheilds up, etc. Why doesn't the computer take over as the minute it senses danger and use it's computer fast reflexes and combat calculation abilities to get out of every fight unscratched? Idk. Also, I seriously started wondering why guys on the bridge don't wear body armor to protect themselves from shrapnel from the constantly exploding consoles. Those things just blast apart the when you shine a laser pointer on the shields...

Whoever invents the non-exploding console would clean up the 24th century.

Longtime Star Trek fan myself. I greatly enjoyed most of the different series, though I had trouble with Enterprise for some reason. Maybe because their engineer was way too twitchy to keep his job, or maybe because the vulcan was even more blatantly a sex icon than Seven of Nine was. I didn't try too hard to watch it, though I gave Scott Bakula props for being a decent captain in the ST tradition.

My favorites would have to be the original followed by STNG and DS9, pretty much in that order. STNG, of all the new series, seemed to be more about exploration and idealism than any of the others...a future we could be happy to dream about. DS9 was more of an action-adventure series, with slightly darker characters, occassional explorations into morality, and touching around the edges of religion and politics.

I just could not stand Ferengi episodes. They were jokes that aren't really very funny. Really...how the blazes did the little idiots ever make it into space?

I don't know what to say about the new film except I have great reservations: Spock and Kirk butting heads...(no surprise really)...but Spock losing his temper? Actually attacking him? Huh?

I, too, had a hard time buying Odo's inability to make accurate faces. The only conclusion I could come to was that he had some kind of psychological block, something holding him back from embracing humanoid shape entirely. Not to mention his inconistent mass. On the other hand, he was a very interesting character and was played exceptionally well. He deserves his fan club.

Captain Picard has to rate as the most respected captains of the series. He lived strictly by the rules of the Federation, even when it was to his disadvantage to do so, and did so with honor. He also surprised me once in a while...like surviving a dagger fight with a Klingon!

For Star Trek, I am as lightweight as fans come. I've never seen the original series, and I have no interest in it either. From age 9 to age 15 I've seen random STNG episodes on TV and after I started earning some cash in summers I've bought all the movies starring STNG crew. I enjoyed the technobabble and that is propably why I've considered bying a box that compiles the Borg-episodes from STNG.

I can only remember pieces of two episodes that I wish I'd see again. First was when the Enterprise flew to an area, where people started randomly falling through solid decks etc. Can't remember if the reason for it was some anomaly in space or some exotic mater. Second episode I can remember was abduction themed, where random people on Enterprise turned up with funky symptoms. One had his blood changed to some clear liquid, one had his hand cut off and attached back with micrometer precision, etc.

Curse upon you, now I feel the need to find a website streaming TNG episodes.-->

You are seriously missing out on something special by disregarding the original series, you should really give it a chance. It presents a kind of Starfleet unseen in any other series (exept TAS, which is GREAT and anyone who says otherwise is a jerk). It's very wild west. They just take the reigns and go around the galaxy forcing their will on people, threatening to destroy entire civilizations if they don't get their acts together, and pretty much use their hyper advanced technology to behave like ancient Greek gods toying with mortals. In fact, they even meet the REAL god Apollo. Kirk is half way towards being the Nietzschen superman... I sometimes wonder what happend to Starfleet that caused them to start off as touchy feely nice guys (in Enterprise) go badass in TOS times, and finally revert to cultureless space dorks in the 24th century...

Don't get me wrong, I love the 24th century set series (TNG is my overall favorite ST series) but they are kindof space dorks.

Whatever interest I even had about the original series, is now gone completely. By that description it sounds even crappier I've imagined before :D

Big time Trekkie, I've seen every episode, even the godawful animated series (sorry blackmetaljesus, but I just don't think it was any good).

Favourite: DS9 without a shadow of a doubt. It had the best and most complex character relations, not to mention a huge recurring cast, it played out on a scale which the other shows didn't even attempt, and it had Garak.

TNG would be after that, it is the one I grew up with and I think Picard is a great captain. Then the original which I finally managed to watch last year, great cast and some good stories. Enterprise next, which had some really awful stories, but I do love the Xindi arc in season 3. Voyager is last because it had a great premise and they completely messed it up with their reset-button mentality.

What other theories have you heard about that? I have not heard any myself. I hadn't ever thought about it to be honest. It was just something fun to watch.

I have a friend who is convinced that French is a dead language only spoken by a few old guys living in the forest, and that english is the universal language. That would kindof fit it in with Worf's parents not having any Russian accent (and Worf's not having one for that matter). The other one I hear a lot is that it has something to do with the universal translators, but honestly I think we can throw that one right out.

I coulda swore Worf was a klingon and not a russian.

I liked the holographic doctor in Voyager (loads of lol), and Data was pretty cool, and I liked the guest appearances of Dwight Schultz. And the Borg appearances. Awesome. Alice Krige as Borg queen.. yayy.

And I'd love access to a holodeck.. They seems really cool, aside from being utterly impossible.

Star Trek physics are well beyond the realm of possibilities anyway. I actually prefer a bit more realistic and less plastic/sterile universe, like the original BSG universe, or Alien (not AvP). Or even Star Trek: Enterprise. Too bad that show was cancelled.

Worf was raised by a couple of Russians from the age of six up.

I think the reason Picard has an accent is because he was born and grew up it Bretagne, a region of France occupied by peoples from the British Isles. The area has a very Celtic identity, so I guess that would explain his Britishness.

I can't wait for Star Trek XI!

can i also say that running consoles off of plasma is sooo stupid and dangerous just look at all the plasma injuries. does mankind get rid of the health and safety police????

the cutest girl has to be T'Pol, my favourite series had to be DS9.

also has anyone else noticed that when picard lets a woman drive his ship she hits a planet and when a woman gets a command she only goes and gets lost in the delta quadrant.

I noticed, but don't put to much stock in it. Remember, the original script of the original series had a female captain, but was only altered after her character did not sit well... with female test audiences!

i was stating it as a sexist joke

i know they are bad but i find them funny, im not sexist because im equally mean to both males and females, the same goes for me on racism.

No need to apologize there, dude, no one has taken offense to anything you've said. I was just taking the opportunity to wave my knowledge of Star Trek lore around. :)
