TheThinkingatheist brought this to my attention: How is it possible to crucify yourself without help?

Ok, well this has devolved into a typical religion thread which means I'm going to close it. My religious views are irrelevant in the matter, but I'd just like to point out to the people promenading logic and science in this debate that most of you haven't actually applied logic or science to the police report, which maintains that a single man was capable of nailing his feet to a cross, tying his neck back, stabbing himself and then drilling holes in his hands while remaining lucid enough to place said hands over spikes.

Officials re-enacted some elements of the crucifixion and concluded that an adult male could perform the act on his own, the agency said.
Am I the only one who sees the absurdity in this? Use your fucking investigative minds.

Kim is believed to have nailed his feet to the cross, tied his neck to it and stabbed himself in the side.

He is then believed to have drilled holes in his hands and slipped them over nails on the cross,
It's right there in the middle of that article, and it's physically possible to do so, provided you don't pass out from the pain of having your feet nailed, or the blood loss from your stab wound. Also:
Officials re-enacted some elements of the crucifixion and concluded that an adult male could perform the act on his own, police said.

The man was a devout Christian, and police speculated that his "deep religious faith" may have helped him endure "immense pain".

Police said they found the man's notes planning the crucifixion.
Well, one less lunatic in this world.

If I can hang upside down with my foot (just one) tied to a tree for 5 hours, and still have the wits about me to cut myself down after so much time had passed that I was seeing visions dancing in my head due to deep meditation - then I have no doubt that this man could have crucify himself.

He was doing something similar to what us in the business of active interaction with the unseen world like to call "interaction by reenactment." People who feel the need to channel dogs will dress up like dogs and walk around and bark at things. People who want to feel connected to Diana's descent into the Underworld utilize an elaborate ritual reenacting the descent and the trade-off for accessing the underworld. Those who wish to have a life-altering vision or guise of wisdom like Odin will hang themselves from a tree by their feet until one occurs.
They imitate those things that they wish to become closer to. Things that made that particular deity, hero, or force of nature significant. The more extreme, and the more closely-related, the better.

Magically? It's Channeling by Reenactment.
Scientifically? It's a euphoric experience caused by very-real roleplaying situations that replicate famous acts of sacrifice of various deities and acts of nature - or whims of heroes. Things that can be replicated and reproduced.

Never doubt us religious folks' will to become closer to our imaginary friends.

:| More probable I think, that the extra blood rushes to the head and pools there, causing the brain cells to effectively malfunction. Similar in nature, I imagine to a near-death experience. I certainly wouldn't recommend the idea to anyone, given the chance of stroke as a result.

Don't know about the Korean guy though. I'm inclined to give "just batshit insane" as my thoroughly amateur diagnosis.

The more the extreme stress placed upon the human body, the greater the "yield" for results. Like Shaman hotboxes, or other "Spiritual Journeys" - if it were easy (not remotely possible), then it wouldn't have taken a deity nor a hero to do it.

There is, actually, a sect of Christianity that do this shit every year (and I would not be surprised if they happened to do it more than once a year) in the Philippines.

But then, if there is a scientific explanation "euphoria induced by roleplaying" how is it still magical? doesn't there come a point when you just go "nah!..... I am not chanelling a dog, I'm just into furries?"

I mean, It happened to me, When I felt I was loosing my faith I had a couple of weeks (more like 1 and a half) of extreme devotion, praying real hard, up to the point when I said "who am I kidding?, I know it's not real..." and then had a very liberating afternoon realising there was no god.

After that I had a couple of instances in which I believed I had magical powers (all while playing World of Darkness games, Damn you White Wolf and your quality roleplaying settings!), one of them EXACTLY like your traffic afecting power you described in another post. Later I realised that I was just a lousy statitian and gave WAAaay more weight ot the instances in which things went my way that the million times it didn't, but for a moment there I could swear to you I could manipulate dice, trafic, move certain objects with my mind, manifest a different lighters than the one I had on my pocket (Haven't smoked in 10 years, Thank you Chesus!), see auras, etc... I even started a group of people that thought that reality was not as it seemed (we were young and "The matrix" is a really good movie), after a couple of sessions It became painfully clear that the girl I liked was into weird shit (sadly not with me) and her friend wanted me for my body, clasic love triangle, guess wee needed two more for a pentagram.

In the end I came to the conclusion that my mind had been plaing tricks on me, and I have had to read a few books to understand why, but in the end it all comes down to how my brain works and how it makes up stuff to try and keep me alive.
