Because it's spurious. Why bother going outside walking for enjoyment knowing the risk of murders or being run over? You can apply it to anythig you care to mention.

Why bother doing ANYTHING?
It's the same logic.

X increases chance of unpleasantries and raises possibility of death, ergo X is bad and people who do X are stupid.
Feel free to insert Motorcycle riding, Diving, Skydiving, Walking down the road, Driving in the rain, Sex, and countless other things.

Except most other things wont pretty much assure you die slowly or at least develop a hideous disease. You can bring up sex and STDs but it's a red herring. Smoking as zero benefit, sex does. As Gnug said, you can't safe smoke and it serves no other purpose but to feed a circular habit. Also, other people can't catch STDs as a result of being around those who do.

I would consider being Paraplegic as a horrendous side-effect of being in a motorcycle accident.

Smoking does have some benefits, but those benefits do not out weigh the health risks.

Can we just agree that some people who smoke make life unpleasant for those of us who do not smoke, and for that reason we find the practice irritating?

I don't really feel the need to condemn smoking in any stronger terms than that.
