Which computing devices do you use?

Of course, I use a PC or laptop for general day-to-day stuff, and those who know me well know I use GNU/Linux (ElementaryOS to be precise) as my main operating system. My laptop is an HP Pavilion g6 with an AMD E2-3000 APU and 8GiB of up yours RAM. Pretty nice machine, couple of years old now. I keep a copy of Windows 7 on it for testing (like LoR site issues), but almost never use it.

My PC is hardly ever used these days except when I need to use an older browser (fuck you, IE 6!). It runs Windows XP, Debian 5, and openSUSE 11.4, although it's had many partitions over its life time.

I use a Samsung Galaxy S3 running Cyanogenmod 11 for my not-at-home browsing (at work, on the train or what-have-you), and, obviously, as a phone/Game Boy substitute.

I have two lilliputers, an Asus Eeepc and an Acer Aspire One, both running Ubuntu variants (can't recall which, they're still boxed from my move a while back).

Finally, last week I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 8 tablet running Android 4.4.2. to pretty much replace my laptots as my portable thought collector. Love it in all the right ways. Massive battery life, this one.

I mostly use my desktop which is an AMD Phenom x4 with 8GiB of RAM.

I also have a laptop which used to be my dad's company laptop. It's a Dell Latitude Intel Core2 Duo with 4GiB of RAM.

I use GNU/Linux exclusively. The desktop runs Slackware and the laptop Fedora.

I don't have a smartphone. I've been thinking about getting one but they all have terrible battery life. If I get one it'll be Linux based, most likely Android. Right I'm pondering LG G2 Mini.

I use a laptop most of the time, not very powerful, like 4gig Ram and 500MB graphics or something. Most importantly, SSD.

On the PC side, I'm using my mate's: 3.4GHz i7-2600 CPU, 8Gig Ram, 4Gig AMD Radeon HG 6800

Smartphone: Nexus 5

I'm happy with all of them.

Yes to SSDs! Both my computers have SSD drives in them. Everyone should experience upgrading from HDD to SSD in their life. Desktop has also an HDD and I've just bought an external USB HDD drive for backups.

duclicsic would have me buy Nexus 5 for a smartpone. It does make a lot of sense. Quick Android updates, good hardware. But it's expensive and doesn't have the best battery life or so I've read.

Greetings,

I've had a Dell T600 XPS since 1998 - it started out with Win98 on it, then XP with multiple partitions for data, etc. I don't use it anymore and have yet to put Debian on the C drive.

I also have a Dell Studio 1737 with Vista Ultimate, on which I do most things - although I now oscillate between this and ...

Finally, I have a SRS laptop - custom-built for video editing - from my brother. I've replaced XP with Ubuntu 12 but have recently updated to the latest, 14.04LTS (for your info Prole!)

My brother did offer me all sorts of towers, etc, but I simply don't have the space for them.

As for mobile phones... I've just got a Nokia Skypephone(!)

Kindest regards,

James

Battery life is a massive bugbear for me too. My phone usually lasts until it's night time unless I use the music player a lot. Today I only used it for listening to a podcast to and from work (about an hour overall), a few texts, and browsing over lunch and it's on 63%. Four or five hours of music or whatever and it moans at me in hunger.

My tablet has lasted a few days with lots of activity (new toy), including watching a fair bit of YouTube and reading comics. Its battery is stonking, though.

Mine still rocks Gnome 2!

Hah, yeah, saw that in the desktop thread. Can't get with the Unity workflow, too much mousing about.

What in Danu's name is that?
Last Nokia I had was a 3510i back in the early 00's. Went with Sony Walkman phones after that 'til my previous, the Samsung Galaxy Ace. Sophie Aldred was my first love, so...

Wonder what the performance difference is between that (version of Linux) and Debian? Bearing in mind, I'm looking for stability above all.

So, how do you work it if you're not "mousing about"? And why would that method be easier/preferred?

Or are you a "command-liner"?

Skypephone S2

I did have a Skypephone S1 originally - they're both from when I worked in the UK, I just haven't switched to an Irish network or upgraded the S2 to a more modern mobile.

My Dr. Who Honey was Nicola Bryant - from the first moment I saw her sitting on a riverbank ... without her blouse ... just before she put it back on. :D

[The topic title seems ... strangely à propos  ]

Kindest regards,

James
