Terminator 2 definitely. Aliens equals Alien, but I would not say it was better.

Most people cite the Godfather 2, but I personally prefer the first one.

Star Trek II:Wrath of Khan kicks the living shit out of the Star Trek The Motion Picture... which isn't any where near as bad as people seem to think.

The Incredible Hulk is a loose sequel to the Hulk - still not a great movie, but better than the first.

Dawn of the Dead is better than Night of the Living Dead, though the original has nostalgia.

Dark Knight is better than Batman Begins.

Empire Strikes back....

Mad Max 2 is better than Mad Max (AKA Road Warrior)

I would hazard that Gremlins 2 was better than Gremlins... but that's more of a personal taste on my behalf.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico over Desperado (personal choice again - and I've haven't seen El mariachi so I kind of consider Desperado as the first one... for now)

Superman 2 kicked ass "Knee before Zod!"

Ummm that's all I can think of at the moment.

Re: Sequels that was better then the first.

I have never seen Bad Boys 1, but my impression (primarily from watching Hot Fuzz) is that Bad Boys 2 is more celebrated. Speaking of which, I preferred Hot Fuzz to Shaun of the Dead but that may not count as a sequel.

It's definitely a short list though.

Army of Darkness > Evil Dead 2 > Evil Dead?

Legend of the Drunken Master > Drunken Master, too close to call for me. The sequel has better fights, but doesn't have the sweet old hermit and the 8 drunken gods.

The Dark Knight > Batman Begins?

Toy Story 3 is highest ranked but I think the first two were better.

Troll 2 because no one has ever heard of Troll 1

Is it movies only or any media?

LotR > The Hobbit but they were pretty different in scale.

I actually knew a guy wasn't aware there was a Troll 2... he loved Troll and totally freaked out when I gave him a double pack VHS with both movies "when the fuck did they make a 2?"

Return of the King>The Two Towers>The Fellowship of the Ring

The Dark Knight beats Batman Begins

Empire Strikes Back beats all the other Star Wars films

Shrek 2 beat the first film, IMO. Not sure if that's where the consensus lies with other people though

The Harry Potter films started off awful but seem to have got progressively better.

I will give those that no one has mentioned yet
Rush Hour 2
and that is all I can think of now.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

Fin.

I can't believe you watched that.

Eh? It's most triumphant and non-non-non-heinous

Also, I watched Troll as a young boy. Gave me nightmares... Not sure I could endure a sequel, although I have watched Critters 2, 3 and 4, rather ashamedly.

Re: Sequels that was better then the first.

You know... Although the SFX are clearly far better in Terminator 2 than in the original, I preferred the central premise of the first. I loved the idea that sending the terminator back didn't stop John Connor's birth, it CAUSED it as part of some cause/effect loop. I thought that the sequel was fun and entertaining but was annoyed that it destroyed this cool idea.

Lethal Weapon 2 > Lethal Weapon
Mostly due to Patsy Kensit ;)

I hated the sixth, they took out all the magic conflict and just turned it into a teen drama. Don't really remember the rest.

And I'll agree to Rush Hour 2. Rush Hour 3 was awful though, couldn't watch the whole thing.

I think the first Harry Potter movies were good.
I say that from the perspective of a boy who was about 7 years old at the time it came out. I watched it like twice a day or something at the most.
Though I used to that with all the movies I loved.

How 'bout the Dr. Who reboot? I think that qualifies.

Evil Dead 3 > Evil Dead 2 > Evil Dead 1

They just kept getting better (and sillier...)

Re: Sequels that was better then the first.

Moving on to documentaries, I thought "Paradise Lost" was a jaw dropper, especially when the correspondence school-trained "expert" witness was testifying that murdering three little boys was just the kind of thing that teens with bad haircuts who listen to heavy metal would do, but "Paradise Lost 2: Revelations," where they actually fingered the guy who did it and then shafted the West Memphis 3 again, made a small part of my brain implode.

When I hear people say, "Well suppose religion is all a myth, what harm can believing it do?" I respond, "Watch the Paradise Lost docs," starting here.

I enjoyed Star Trek II, Terminator 2 and Aliens more than the proceeding films.
